Premier League – Week Two Highlights

Take a look at our range of Premier League hospitality for the 2022/23 season

Harry Kane’s last-minute equaliser earned Spurs a draw at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea and Spurs played in a dramatic London Derby at Stamford Bridge on Sunday where a last-minute goal in stoppage time from Harry Kane took Tottenham from behind for a 2-2 draw.

Thomas Tuchel’s side dominated the first half and earned a 19th minute goal from their new summer signing Kalidou Kouliably after he powered home a volley from Marc Cucurella’s perfectly crossed corner.

Spurs were struggling to make an impression until the second half when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg managed to equalize.

Controversy sparked however when referee Anthony Taylor failed to penalise Rodrigo Bentancur for a challenge on Kai Havertz, which brought fury to the two managers, Tuchel and Conte, who both went face-to-face and ended up receiving yellow cards.

After the game restored, Chelsea regained the lead when a pass from Raheem Sterling found the feet of Reece James and celebrations at Stamford Bridge were soaring.

Chelsea couldn’t see the game out however and a header from Harry Kane in stoppage time took the game to a 2-2 draw.

Tempers continued to rise and at full time, Tuchel and Conte clashed once more, somewhat comically to earn red cards with a melee of players and staff arguably spoiling the fun. A great end to the weekend’s action.

Another win for Arsenal sees them second in the table

Man City signing Gabriel Jesus scored two goals for Arsenal in an entertaining encounter at the Emirates Stadium.

The Brazilian striker took his Premier League total from six goals to eight in his past nine appearances with two goals scored before half time.

Early into the second half came a glimmer of hope for Leicester when William Saliba scored an own goal. Shortly after, Granit Xhaka restored Arsenal’s two goal lead once again finding the back of Danny Ward’s net bringing the score to 3-1.

James Maddison found the bottom left hand corner with a right footed shot from a difficult angle to put Leicester back in it in the 74th minute, but it was Martinelli with a shot from outside the box assisted by Jesus to seal the deal for Arsenal 4-2.

Four goals for Man City secures them the top spot

The Premier League champions produced a blistering display the Etihad Stadium winning 4-0 against Bournemouth and putting them at the top of the table.

Dominating since kick-off, City took no time in putting the ball away in the first half with an opener from Gundogan setting the tone for the blues. An impressive strike from Kevin De Bruyne took the tally to 2-0 as he bent the ball into the bottom corner with the outside of his boot. Phil Foden made sure of the points before half time with a shot that Bournemouth keeper Mark Travers couldn’t keep out.

The cherries remained the weaker side into the second half, and although City couldn’t plot another goal themselves, an own goal from Jefferson Lerma took the score to a breezy 4-0 for Pep Guardiola’s side.

City top the Premier League table maintaining their 100 per cent start to the season, while Bournemouth take their first loss putting them in the tenth position.

Man United shocker puts them 4 goals behind and bottom of the table

Was it Brentford’s solid play or United’s shocking performance behind the humiliating 4-0 result against Man United at the Gtech Community Stadium?

Brentford scored four goals in the first 35 minutes of the game, leaving United supporters stunned as they continue their losing streak.

A strike from Josh Dasilva put the hosts ahead when his shot couldn’t be saved by David de Gea. Mathias Jenson doubled the lead shortly after when he dispossessed Christian Eriksen, following with goals from Ben Mee and Bryan Mbeumo to put them 4-0 up.

The defeat comes as United’s seventh in a row away from home in their worst run since 1936, and while Brentford will be celebrating their historic win, United boss Erik ten Hag faces the challenging task of picking up his players in time for the visit of Liverpool to Old Trafford next Monday.

Steven Gerrard gets one over on his old midfield rival Frank Lampard

Aston Villa and Everton managers came face to face for the first time since their old days playing against each other in Chelsea v Liverpool games.

Both sides had opened their season on a loss, but it was Gerrard’s team who got their first win of the campaign with a dominant display at Villa Park.

Aston Villa looked the more dominant side in the first half and got their breakthrough when Ollie Watkins, making his first start of the season, found Danny Ings inside the box and put them 1-0 up.

Everton, still lacking a recognised striker, did not manage a shot on target in the first half.

It wasn’t until the closing stages that the next goal came, when Buendia scored from another good play by Villa.

Lucas Digne turned a cross into his own net to give Everton hope and take away Villa’s clean sheet, but it was the Toffees who held on and gained the three points.

Dean Henderson saves a Declan Rice penalty to secure Forest their first Prem win since 1999

West Ham missed several chances in the first half when Pablo Fornals hit the crossbar, followed by a goal being disallowed and Kurt Zouma’s header being cleared off the line.

Benrahma managed to find the net for Nottingham Forest putting them in front and the home side’s celebrations went wild.

West Ham had an opportunity to pull it back when Scott McKenna took a handball inside the box. Declan Rice’s penalty was saved by Dean Henderson to deny West Ham an equaliser and it was Forest who walked away with the three points and a victory to remember.

Premier League- first week run down

Man City take the early title advantage on week one

The reigning champions Manchester City began the defence of their 2021/22 title and wasted no time in showing they will be the team to beat once again this season, beating the Hammers away 2-0.

Erling Haaland made his Manchester City Premier League debut, scoring two goals and winning man of the match, demonstrating the huge threat he will pose this season.

West Ham suffered an early blow as goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was substituted due to injury midway through the first half. New permanent signing Areola couldn’t react quick enough to Haaland’s dash, leading to a penalty for the blues. Haaland grabbed the ball, demanded he took it and slotted it home just nine minutes before half-time.

The second goal came in the 65th minute with a defence-splitting pass from Kevin De Bruyne into the feet of Haaland where he applied the finishing touch into the far corner. I’m sure we’ll be see that combination plenty of times this season and what looked like a difficult game on paper, was routine for City.

Liverpool drop points against newly promoted Fulham

A frustrating afternoon for Liverpool as they failed to take the three points away at Craven Cottage leaving them with a 2-2 draw.

Fulham played some splendid football, keeping the reds in their own half for the first 10 minutes of the game. Fulham opened the scoring as Aleksandar Mitrovic got the better of Trent Alexander-Arnold to head them ahead after meeting a superb cross by Kenny Tete.

In a thrilling match, Liverpool substitute Nunez marked his Premier League debut by equalising with a close-range flick before Fulham restored the lead from the penalty spot after Mitrovic was fouled by Virgil van Dijk.

This meant Liverpool had ended a run of 51 Premier League matches without conceding a penalty, the longest ongoing sequence in the competition.

A late leveller by Salah stopped Fulham from taking the win, but Klopp’s side will have plenty to work on if they want to get back to their top spot in the league table.

Arsenal can gain early momentum

Arsenal began the season with a solid victory at Selhurst Park on the opening night of the Premier League, securing a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace. After losing their opening three games last season (well documented on a certain TV series just released), the early indication is that Arsenal may gain some early momentum into the season.

Mikel Arteta’s team were rewarded for an excellent start as Gabriel Martinelli scored the opener 20 minutes in to the first half from a perfect cross from new Man City recruit, Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Ramsdale had to be alert to divert Odsonne Edouard’s close-range header away from goal from what was Palace’s first attempt on goal just before half time. The home side put substantial palace on Arsenal’s defence, but Saliba and Gabriel in particular stood strong to keep them out.

Palace went on to concede an unfortunate own goal when Bukayo Saka’s cross was diverted past the keeper by Marc Guehi with a poor attempt at a clearance, giving Arsenal a 2-0 victory.

Spurs could be the real deal this season

Tottenham won an impressive 4-1 to Southampton getting their Premier League off to a flying start.

Spurs fell behind in the 12th minute when Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse volleyed the ball into the ground and watched it bounce over Hugo Lloris. In previous seasons, Tottenham may have taken some time to bounce back from an early deficit, but from that moment it was all the North London side.

Ryan Sessegnon equalised from a header making his first Premier League goal for Spurs and then Eric Dier then went on to meet Son Heung-min’s cross with a low, flicked header into the far corner.

Tottenham were playing with confidence in the second half where a shocking Mohammed Salisu own goal and a calm Kulusevski finish secured an easy 4-1 victory.

Were Tottenham that good or is it Southampton’s lack of quality that determined the rest? It’s Chelsea v Tottenham next week, a real test for both sides.

Early signs of struggle for Everton

Chelsea opened the Premier League season with a 1-0 win at Goodison Park after a penalty from Jorginho sealed the deal in the first half.

Thomas Tuchel started both new summer signings Kalidou Koulibaly and Raheem Stirling, neither however could find the back of the net in their Chelsea debuts.

Everton posed little threat in their attack, with the sale of Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin absent with injury they lacked a recognised striker.

Ben Godfrey faced a serious early injury in the first half from a challenge by Kai Havertz leaving him with a fractured leg.

Chelsea did not seem to cause Everton too many serious problems, but Thomas Tuchel’s side will be delighted to start the season off with a win.

Change of management but no improvements from Man United

Manchester United have started the season off with a shocking 2-1 defeat at home to Brighton condemning Erik ten Hag to a losing start as manager.

It was Pascal Gross’s first-half double that stunned Old Trafford giving the Seaguls a 2-0 lead. Not even the second-half introduction of Cristiano Ronaldo could deny Brighton, although United did threaten a comeback when a scramble inside the box ended with Alexis Mac Allister putting the ball into his own net after an under pressure pass from the goalkeeper.

In nine previous league visits, Brighton had managed only one draw, so this victory was historic.

Bournemouth add further misery to Aston Villa’s poor form

Premier League newcomers Bournemouth got their season off to a dream start with a deserved 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at the Vitality Stadium.

The game’s opening goal came only two minutes in as Jefferson Lerma scored the quickest goal on matchday one by a promoted side in Premier League history. With Villa temporarily down to ten men due to left-back Lucas Digne coming off the pitch due to a nosebleed, the Cherries were able to convert a corner and put them 1-0 up.

After half time the second goal came in the 80th minute from Kieffer Moore scoring his first top-flight goal to give them a comfortable lead.

Leeds and Newcastle start with home wins, whilst Leicester draw against Brentford

After just surviving last season and losing Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha, Leeds were desperate to start off positively and they did just that, beating Wolves 2-1.

Newcastle saw off the long awaited Premier League return of Nottingham Forest 2-0 as Eddie Howe and the free-spending Georgie club look set to have a strong season.

Finally Leicester and Brentford shared the spoils with a 2-2 draw. Brentford made a terrific comeback from 2-0 down, whilst Leicester have clubs circling around their stars players as their financial struggles continue to be rumoured.

FA Cup Final Preview and How it Happened

The FA Cup is regarded as magical by football fans up and down the country and over the years has provided moments that many fans will never forget. This year’s FA cup has been no different, as we head into the Final at the home of English football, Wembley.

The FA Cup is the oldest Football competition in the world, founded in 1871 it has been going for 151 years.

Much Anticipated Round 3

The Premier League teams entered the fray in round three. There were no upsets for Manchester City who dispatched League two Swindon 4-1. Liverpool replicated that score line against a shy Shrewsbury Town. The goals were flying in for the Premier League sides as Chelsea ran riot against Chesterfield, knocking them out of the cup.

Fans flock from corner to corner of the country to see their teams try to go on a cup journey. One set of fans who did not have far to travel were Crystal Palace. Palace made the short trip across South London where they faced Millwall in a London derby. After a tentative start Crystal Palace powered past a hostile Millwall and booked their place in the 4th round.

For many of the lower league teams, the FA Cup is a chance to play teams they may never usually face and likewise for the teams at the top end of the footballing pyramid. The biggest shock of the third round happened at St James’ Park. Newly owned Newcastle United faltered against League One’s Cambridge United. Results like this is what make the FA Cup so special to many.

There were a couple of other third round shock exits as 14-time winners of the competition, Arsenal fell short against Nottingham Forest. Everyone likes to see the underdogs do well in the FA Cup. This year’s underdogs were Boreham Wood of the National League. They picked apart a struggling Wimbledon side to progress to round four after being in the competition since round one.

Giant Killing

February rolled around and we had the pleasure of more FA Cup action. If teams can get past this round, then Wembley would start to be on the mind of many fans and the ‘what if’ conversations start to be had.

Manchester United have won the FA Cup on 12 occasions and were looking to do well in the competition as they haven’t had much success of late in other competitions. They had a home fixture against Championship side Middlesborough. A tense game went to extra time, where the deadlock was still not broken. Penalties was to be the decider. A defiant Middlesborough beat Manchester United 8-7 on penalties, and they put themselves in the hat for the next round.

Another Premier League heavyweight were put under pressure in round four. Plymouth made the trip up to London from the South Coast to Stamford Bridge. A defiant Plymouth pushed the European Champions to extra time. Unfortunately for Plymouth, Chelsea’s quality showed as they scored in extra time knocking Plymouth out. Last year’s champions Leicester were stunned as Nottingham Forest dismantled them, winning 4-1, beating another Premier League side.

Premier League top dogs Liverpool and Manchester City yet again cruised into the next round with convincing wins against Cardiff and Fulham.

The shocks did not let up in round five. Most notably in the Middlesborough v Tottenham Hotspur fixture. Middlesborough found themselves a winner late in extra time. Tottenham’s miserable wait for a trophy continued.

Boreham wood’s magical journey also came to an end in the fifth round losing to Everton. Liverpool kept their hopes alive with a narrow win at home to Norwich with rivals Man City winning away at Peterborough.

The Business End

The business end was approaching with the Quarter Final draw done. Some of the big hitters were still in the hat. In form forest hosted Liverpool which was a cagey affair. Liverpool prevailed triumphant with a 1-0 victory. Crystal Palace, who’s last trip to Wembley was six years ago hosted Everton. Crystal Palace got off to a slow start, but their quality shined through and ended up beating the toffees 4-1. This sent the Palace faithful into pandemonium, they were on their way to Wembley.

The Semi Final draw was made up of Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea and Crystal Palace. The draw was watched by many with anticipation. Chelsea drew Crystal Palace with Liverpool and City drawing each other in what was a massive fixture.

Wembley Bound

Wembley beckoned, Liverpool v City was first up. Liverpool got off to a flyer with an early goal. From there City never looked to be in the driving seat. With goals from Konate and a stunning brace from Mane, Liverpool were 3-0 up at half time. City fought back after half time with a Grealish goal and a late strike from Bernardo Silva, however it was not to be enough against a resolute Liverpool side.

The other semi-final saw Chelsea play Crystal Palace. With a raging atmosphere the players took to a sunny Wembley. Nothing separated the sides in the first half with chances for both teams. The game approached the later stages and Chelsea showed their quality with two goals in short succession. Palace hearts were broken.

This made the match up for the Final. Liverpool play Chelsea this weekend at Wembley for what will surely be one of the games of the season. Chelsea will be looking for their revenge after losing to Liverpool on penalties in the Carabao Cup Final. Who will you be backing?

England v New Zealand Series Review

England v New Zealand Series Review

When play was about to begin at 10:59am on June 2nd, few would have predicted what came to pass at Lord’s, Trent Bridge, and Headingley over the following month. Although there was a keen sense of anticipation around The Home of Cricket, with Ben Stokes and Brendan McCullum still fresh in their new roles as captain and head coach, the past year or so hasn’t exactly suggested that this test team was capable of mixing it with the best in the world. How wrong we all were. Three wins from three matches, all achieved from positions that England of old would have capitulated and collapsed were to follow, and that’s not the least of it.

The beginning of a new era

England began their so-called test reset with a taste of things to come at Lord’s. Joe Root notched up his 10,000-test run as part of a spellbinding 115 not out 4th innings century to secure the win – honourable mention to Ben Foakes who provided the perfect foil for the ex-captain as he steered England to only their second win in their last eleven test matches. Despite Root’s heroics however, this was really a match and wicket for the bowlers to excel, and England’s attack didn’t disappoint with Jimmy Anderson returning to the line-up to take six wickets and Matthew Potts on debut taking a superb seven across both innings as he introduced himself to the England faithful for the first time.

Whilst Lord’s was a brilliant win for an England team starved of both confidence and results of late, and meant England chasing down a total that they had previously baulked at exactly a year earlier against the same opponents, it was about to be topped. Twice. After high first innings totals by both sides, which for England included Ollie Pope hitting a brilliant 145 and yet more runs for Root (176), England were set 299 to win the match. Everything seemed all too familiar when Alex Lees edged one to Blundell off the bowling of Southee to put England at 93-4, and we all thought we knew what was coming. With Jonny Bairstow at the crease though, it’s never that simple. Still needing over 200 runs to win the match, aided by Captain Ben Stokes (75*), Bairstow produced an innings full of shots you’d expect to see in The Hundred or Vitality Blast as he hit 136 off only 92 deliveries, including bringing up his century in only 77 balls to fall agonisingly short of an English record set in 1902. This test match encapsulated the change in mindset that both Stokes and McCullum have looked to instil in this England side, and they weren’t done yet…

To Headingley, the scene of one of England’s greatest days in recent years. Ben Stokes and Jack Leach’s remarkable run chase in the 2019 Ashes series will live long in the memory, and the latter was at it again, but this time with the ball, taking five-for in both innings, and in the process becoming only the third spinner to do so in a test match in England. The other two? Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan. However, much like at Trent Bridge, few could keep pace with Jonny Bairstow who stole the show once again, this time on his home ground. At 55-6 in the first innings, England again turned to the in-form Yorkshireman, who, aided by debutant Jamie Overton (97), hit another remarkable century, perhaps even more impressive than his match winning one at Trent Bridge, given the dire situation England found themselves in, with the Kiwis setting a solid 329 all out in their first innings. For the third time in three matches, England would need to produce a 4th innings run chase that would be amongst their ten biggest of all time; and for the third time in three matches, they did so in style. Root and Pope would hit centuries and Bairstow a casual, unbeaten 71 off 44 deliveries to win the match and whitewash the series at a canter.

What’s to come?

With a one-off test against India at Edgbaston, and a three-match series against South Africa at Lord’s, Old Trafford and The Oval to come, there should be plenty more box office action to get stuck into this summer. A new era has dawned on English test cricket, and by all accounts, it looks like it is going to be an exciting one.
