Best Sports Events Coming Up This Winter

2023 has been a remarkable year of live events. During the height of the summer season we witnessed an Ashes series for the ages, saw the dawn of a new era in men’s tennis at Wimbledon and created electric atmospheres during headline concerts at Wembley Stadium.

Now while the summer months are behind us, there is still plenty to look forward to before the year is out and heading into 2024…

When the schedule is released for the new season one of the first dates that immediately draws attention is the iconic Boxing Day fixtures in the Premier League. This year Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City all play fixtures in front of their own fans on Boxing Day in what promises to be a festive schedule full of twists and turns.

The next two fixtures – involving the Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens – will both be held at the newly built Tottenham Hotspur Stadium where fans will be immersed in an authentic NFL experience involving pre-game activities, stalls and American themed food and drink options.

Following the international series, all roads will then lead to the Allegiant Stadum, Paradise, Nevada for Super Bowl LVIII. If you were hooked on thrills of The Ashes and The Hundred this summer, then you are in luck! The next major cricket event is just around the corner with the best 10 teams in the world all heading to India for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in October.

Running all the way from 5 October through to 19 November, the tournament takes place in a round robin set up where every team will play each other once, resulting in the top four placed teams heading to the semi-finals before the winners make it through to the final hosted at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad – the largest cricket venue in the world.

Led by Jos Buttler, England will be one of the favourites again but will be met by the fierce challenge of India on home soil, Australia and Pakistan in their quest to retain the World Cup trophy for another four years.

Tennis season concludes for the winter in Turin

Previously hosted at The O2 Arena, the Nitto ATP Finals offer a compelling conclusion to the tennis season this winter.

The best eight players in the world get invited to compete in Turin for the final piece of silverware of the season. Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic have dominated the scene so far this year, picking up several major honours between them and locking horns in a final on Centre Court at Wimbledon that will live long in the memory.

With the end of year number one spot also up for grabs between the world’s best players, the Nitto ATP Finals will be a truly compelling way to end what has been a fantastic year of tennis in 2023.

Following the end of the season, we can also begin to turn our attention to tennis coming up in 2024. Here are some of the key dates in the UK grass court season next summer…

June 17-23 – cinch Championships

June 25-29 – The Boodles

July 1-14 – The Championships, Wimbledon

Crunch time in the Formula 1 season

The Formula 1 season enters the decisive part of the season in the winter with plenty of historic venues set to stage races before the season is out.

Following trips to Mexico City and São Paulo, the race heads stateside for the Heineken Silver Las Vegas Grand Prix on a brand new street circuit. Expect famous faces, incredible landmarks and thrilling speeds on the Las Vegas strip.

The season will then conclude in Abu Dhabi on 26 November – the setting of Max Verstappen’s first ever Championship victory over Lewis Hamilton.

Since that famous race in 2021 the Dutch driver has looked unstoppable. He will be hoping to arrive at the Yas Marina Circuit unharmed to secure what will be a third title in a row, while the likes of Fernando Alonso, Charles Leclerc and George Russell will be looking to rain on his parade during the final few months of the season.

November 16-18 – Las Vegas Grand Prix

November 24-26 – Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Darts fans descend on Alexandra Palace this winter

All eyes will be on Ally Pally once again for the Worlds Dart Championship, where spectators marvel at the best players in the world within an atmosphere unlike any other.

Since moving to North London, the World Championships has been an iconic event on the UK sporting schedule each winter and will take place this year between 15 December – 3 January.

Last year Michael Smith beat three-time champion Michael van Gerwen in an incredible final which produced some unforgettable moments that got everyone engulfed in the drama and excitement of the sport, and we should expect more of the same when the darts arrives in London again this December.

NBA Paris Game to take place in January

Since 1990, the NBA has been taking regular season matches outside the United States and Canada as part of the leagues Global Games series.

Having successfully hosted several games in Mexico City and London, the league will now return to Europe to play it’s third regular season game at the Accor Arena in Paris. The Milwaukee Bucks and the Chicago Bulls won the first NBA Paris Games in 2020 and 2023, showcasing the world class talent within the NBA to the rest of the world.

On 11 January, the NBA Paris Game will feature a must-see clash between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Brooklyn Nets, pitching together some of the best players in the world for fans in the French capital.

The Biggest Sporting Events in 2024!

With the Olympic Games, European Championships, T20 Cricket World Cup and many more events scheduled for 2024, the biggest sporting events of next year look sure to be memorable…

Paris 2024: Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games

Undoubtedly one of the headline events of next summer, Paris has the luxury of hosting the 2024 Olympic Games.

Starting on 26th July, there will be a total of 35 venues hosting the Games, with several of them located inside 10km of the Olympic Village and the city’s iconic landmarks.

There will be one new sport on the schedule too. Breaking, a competitive form of breakdancing, gained popularity at the Youth Games in 2018 and athletes will now be given their first shot at a place on the legendary Olympic podium at Paris 2024.

Twelve years on from London 2012, Great Britain’s most successful athletes will be back on the bike, in the pool and on the track as they look to keep their sporting legacy alive during an unmissable summer of Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Euro 2024 to be held in Germany

All eyes will be on Germany next summer as they host the 2024 European Championships. The last edition of the Euros was one of the most memorable tournaments in recent history as Italy won their second title, leaving England heartbroken at Wembley in the final after extra time and penalties.

Knockout and group stage matches will be held across 10 different cities, including at Dortmund’s Signal-Iduna-Park, Munich’s Allianz Arena and the Olympiastadion in Berlin where the final will be held.

Can England finally get their hands on a major trophy for the first time in 58 years or will Mbappe be able to captain France to glory?

As the competition draws closer, England will also be facing Brazil and Belgium at Wembley, as Gareth Southgate will look to nail down his best eleven going into the summer.

All roads lead to Wembley for the UEFA Champions League Final

The biggest competition in Europe is heading for an epic climax at Wembley Stadium in 2024.

Manchester City are currently European Champions after their historic treble winning campaign last season and they will be hoping to do the same again. They qualified easily from their group and will be going into the knockout stages confident of another deep run.

Pep Guardiola’s side are the favourites to retain their trophy but 13-time winners Real Madrid will also be standing in their way, as well as Spanish giants Barcelona, domestic rivals Arsenal and Ligue 1 champions PSG despite the departure of Lionel Messi in the summer.

German champions Bayern Munich beat Borussia Dortmund in an all-German affair last time the final was held at Wembley thanks to a dramatic late winner – and they will both be looking to make it to London again in 2024 for a final that promises to be a showstopping conclusion to the season.

West Indies and USA host the T20 World Cup

Fresh off the hype of an Ashes series for the ages and a World Cup to follow in India this year, the relentless cricket calendar will roll on again next year with the 2024 T20 World Cup the standout event of the summer.

For the first time ever World Cup matches will be played in the USA who will be hosting the tournament next June after they were successful in a joint bid with the West Indies.

The usual suspects India, Australia and Pakistan will all be well placed with their star-studded line-ups, while England will go into the tournament as defending champions after Jos Buttler’s side won a thrilling final in 2022.

Taking place in June, the world’s best players will converge on the West Indies and USA straight from the conclusion of the IPL. Then following the events of the final at the end of the month, England’s stars will quickly turn their attention to red ball series’ against West Indies and Sri Lanka back at home.

Cricket fans will be spoilt for choice yet again in 2024, here are key dates for your diary…

22-30 May – England v Pakistan four-match T20 Series

4-30 June – T20 World Cup (West Indies and USA)

10-30 July – England v West Indies three-match Test Series

21 Aug – 10 Sept – England v Sri Lanka three-match Test Series

19-29 Sept – England v Australia five-match ODI Series

NFL returns to London again

Once again, NFL London was a huge success in 2023, with memorable matches taking place at both Wembley and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Jacksonville Jaguars made London their home once again, with two victories in their two matches in the capital.

In 2024, NFL is confirmed to be coming to London yet again. In 2022, Jacksnville Jaguars confirmed they will be using Wembley as their home ground for at least three more years, meaning 2024 is the last year of this deal, with the potential of more to come.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is a brilliant ground made for NFL and it will also continue to host at least two regular season matches a seaason for the forseeable future.

Can a Brit win at the British Grand Prix in 2024?

When the Formula 1 calendar gets released, there are a select few events that jump off the page – the British Grand Prix is one of those. With an atmosphere unlike any other, the Grand Prix at Silverstone always promises to be an incredible and unpredictable weekend of racing.

Max Verstappen stamped his dominance on the race in 2023 and extended his lead within the drivers’ championship with his eighth win of the season at Silverstone – ahead of British stars Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton.

Sticking with tradition, the British GP will take place within the first weekend of July in 2024 despite some changes to the schedule in Formula 1’s attempt to make the season more regionalised and cut down on unnecessary travelling to events.

Did you know at Engage we cover all the overseas Grand Prix? Join us at our world-class ICON hospitality at Silverstone or travel to see the racing in Monaco, Singapore, Las Vegas and more in 2024!

A new era is dawning at Wimbledon

In 2023, 20-year-old Carlos Alcaraz put an end to Novak Djokovic’s reign as Wimbledon champion in a trilling five set victory on centre court. Along with Federer’s retirement in 2022 and Rafael Nadal now in the twilight of his career, the guard is beginning to change in the race for Grand Slam titles on the tour.

The Australian Open will kick start the events on the tour in 2024 with Djokovic aiming to win his fifth title at Melbourne Park within the space of six years.

Then following the French Open in May, the grass court season get underway at the cinch Championships and The Boodles, before the best players in the world try to get their hands on the famous Wimbledon trophy.

Reigning champions Carlos Alcaraz and Markéta Vondroušová will enter the tournament full of confidence, but Djokovic will be after revenge and the next generation will be chasing them down too as they look to prove they have what it takes to make their mark at one of the most prestigious events on the tour.

What to expect at the MLB in London

Baseball is very much riding along the coattails of the NFL in this country, following a surge in popularity in the UK in recent years.

In June, St Louis Cardinals will play the Chicago Cubs at the London Stadium in a two-game series in Stratford.

The MLB London series has become a regular fixture on the London sporting calendar since its launch in 2019, when the New York Yankees faced the Boston Red Sox, in the first official MLB game in Europe.

Now it’s the turn of the Cardinals and the Cubs who have 11 and three World Series Championships respectively. The two will compete at the former Olympic Stadium which will transform into an authentic ballpark.

MLB Pitch

St Louis Cardinals v Chicago Cubs

The Cardinals and the Cubs

This isn’t just any old matchup either, the Cardinals vs Cubs is a 130-year-old rivalry owing to the proximity of the two cities and the fact they are divisional rivals in the National League Central.

The division was created in 1994, by moving two teams from the National League West (the Cincinnati Reds and the Houston Astros) and three teams from the National League East (the Chicago Cubs, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the St. Louis Cardinals).

Since then the Cardinals have dominated, winning 12 of the last 26 division championships, plus three wild card wins. The Cubs have the second most division championships with six, as well as three wild card wins.

However, the ultimate prize, i.e. the World Series Championships, was claimed by the Houston Astros in 2022 (now of the American League West), defeating the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 in a best-of-seven series.

The 2023 regular season begins on March 30 and both the Cardinals and the Cubs will be hoping to reach the postseason. Last year only the Cardinals made it to the playoffs, losing in the wild card round to eventual runners-up the Philadelphia Phillies.

MLB

Players to look out for

Both teams boast some of the league’s best players including third baseman Nolan Arenado, first baseman Paul Goldschmidt (both Cardinals) and outfielder Ian Happ (Cubs), all of whom were selected for the 2022 All-Star Game.

For context, Nolan Arenado of the Cardinals is the 9th best player on the MLB The Show video game (baseball’s equivalent to FIFA) with a 95 overall rating.

All the ingredients are there for a fiery matchup between two of baseball’s most respected teams. The Cardinals are second only to the New York Yankees with 11 World Series titles, their last coming in 2011 against the Texas Rangers.

As for the Chicago Cubs their last World Series title came in 2016, a historic occasion which saw the ‘North Siders’ end their 108-year World Series drought.

The MLB London Series

Although still in its infancy, the London Series is already starting to make its own history. In 2019, the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox contested a two-game series and the first regular season game ever to be played in Europe. The Yankees won the first game 17–13, and the second 12–8. Such was the success of that game, the partnership has been extended to 2025 so you can expect more MLB action in Europe in the years to come.

What to expect at the London Stadium

Ahead of the series, the London Stadium will have a new baseball field overlay fitted onto the existing field and running track, as it did in 2019, with a seating configuration that will emulate the intimate feel of a classic American ballpark.

Fans can also expect the very best of baseball cuisine, with dishes inspired by the home cities of the two clubs – St. Louis and Chicago.

Special guests and musical entertainment are yet to be announced but in 2019, the ceremonial first pitches were thrown by participants of the Invictus Games with Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, in attendance.

We suspect they won’t be returning for this year’s iteration, which is a shame because they are going to miss one hell of a show. Be sure to avoid disappointment and book your seats now.

Top Events in Manchester 2023

There is something special about the city of Manchester, with its abundance of sporting and musical exports from Joy Division and Oasis to the Busby Babes and the Class of 92.

With such a conveyor belt of talent recognised the world over, it is fitting that Manchester should boast some of the UK’s finest venues to showcase its roster of stars.

In the coming months, these venues will play host to the biggest stars in sports and entertainment and spaces will no doubt be limited despite the vast capacities many of Manchester’s stadiums hold.

Manchester United vs Chelsea –  Old Trafford – 22 April

A guaranteed sellout, Old Trafford, the UK’s largest club football stadium will host a classic Premier League encounter in April. Arguably United’s toughest remaining league fixture, despite Chelsea’s recent dip in form, Marcus Rashford and co will be hoping to turn over The Blues en route to the club’s first title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

At the time of writing, Erik Ten Hag’s men still have an outside chance of winning the Premier League, and, if that still remains the case in April, this match will go a long way to deciding the title.

Chelsea may not be in the title race themselves, but they will relish the opportunity to have their say and prevent an old rival from going all the way in the process, as they did in 2016, after defeating rivals Tottenham and confirming Leicester City as Premier League champions.

Arctic Monkeys – Emirates Old Trafford – 2 June

The boys from Sheffield are back following the release of their seventh studio album The Car, which peaked at No. 2 in the UK album charts behind Taylor Swift’s Midnights.

The seven-time Brit award winners have reinvented themselves over the years, from their garage rock upstart in 2006 with their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, to the lounge pop tone of Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino in 2017.

The Monkeys have headlined Glastonbury twice in 2007 and 2013 respectively, and are heavily rumoured to do so again in 2023.

In June they will take centre stage at the Emirates Old Trafford in front of 10,000 people. They last played the venue in 2007 and will be supported by famous Swedish rockers, The Hives, and Liverpudlian four-piece, The Mysterines.

Frequently lauded as one of the best bands of all time, even Bob Dylan has claimed to have made “special efforts” to see the Arctic Monkeys live. You won’t want to miss this.

The Ashes 4th Test – Emirates Old Trafford – 19-23 July

It’s back, four years since the last Ashes Series in England which ended in a 2-2 draw, with Australia retaining the old trophy having won the 2017-18 series.

After England’s last Ashes humiliation in Australia, a 4-0 defeat, Ben Stoke’s men will be looking for revenge under new coach Brendon McCullum who led England to an unbeaten 2022 after he took charge in March.

With nothing to choose between both teams going into the tournament the 4th Test will likely be pivotal in deciding the eventual outcome. With England’s all-guns-blazing batting style and Australia’s clinical bowling attack, the series will no doubt be a perfect storm of classic Ashes chaos.

England vs New Zealand T20 – Emirates Old Trafford – 1 September

Completing our hat trick of Emirates Old Trafford events is England’s T20 clash with New Zealand. A year on from their World Cup success England will be hoping to solidify their status as the team to beat in white ball cricket.

The series is sandwiched between The Ashes and the Cricket World Cup, so players will be looking to catch the eye of selectors pre-tournament.

Whether England win or lose The Ashes, a night of big sixes will be the perfect response and the Barmy Army will be behind them every step of the way.

Peter Kay Live – AO Arena, Manchester – 22 September – 1 December

Modestly billed as, “one of Bolton’s funniest comedians,” Peter Kay is finally back for his first stand-up tour in 12 years.

One of Britain’s best-loved comedians, Kay’s 2010 tour still officially ranks with the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest-selling comedy tour of all time, playing to over 1.2 million people.

When tickets first went on pre-sale, the 02 Priority website crashed. Such has been the demand, Kay announced additional dates for 2024 and 2025.

Fans had similar frustrations when trying to purchase Beyonce tickets for her 2023 UK tour, leading some to call her the ‘Peter Kay of pop’.

One thing is for sure, the Bolton funnyman will no doubt have Manchester in raptures come September.

The build up to Cheltenham Festival 2023

As we head into 2023, the Cheltenham Festival is fast approaching, and the festive racing has already indicated which runners to look out for come March.

With just 11 weeks to go until the four-day race event, many punters have already placed their bets in the hope of securing favourable odds whilst they can.

Nicky Henderson’s Jet Powered is the most high-profile odds reversal since the festive racing began. Before the Introductory Hurdle at Newbury on 31 December Jet Powered was the second favourite for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham, but flopped spectacularly as 66-1 outsider Jupiter Du Gite rode to victory, causing major upheaval to the ante-post market.

As a result, the winner, Jupiter Du Gite has been quoted at 16/1 for the Supreme Novices Hurdle in March. Other hot favourites include Constitution Hill in the Champion Hurdle and Galopin Des Champs in the Gold Cup on the final day.

However, there are still races to come where ante-post value might be found before the festival, so keep an eye on the racing calendar.

And it seems the appetite for racing is greater than ever after Cheltenham Racecourse recorded its largest-ever New Year’s Day attendance with 35,722 visitors brushing off their festive hangovers.

Impressive though that is, attendances for the four-day Cheltenham Festival are far greater, generating upwards of 68,500 per day. For 200 years, the Cheltenham Festival has been one of the biggest horse racing events in the world, and second only to the Grand National in terms of prize money.

What to expect at Cheltenham 2023

For the 2023 iteration, there will be 28 races with race distances ranging from 1m7f to 3m7f, plus a variety of hurdles to jump in between.

The action on Day One revolves around the Champion Hurdle, arguably the world’s foremost hurdles event. The in-form Jupiter Du Gite will go toe-to-toe with favourite Constitution Hill and Honeysuckle, who won this race in 2021 and is still unbeaten.

As for Day Two, the focus is very much on the Queen Mother Champion Chase, a two-mile 13-fence race – the leading minimum-distance chase in the National Hunt calendar.

In 2022 the race was won by Energumene and he is the favourite to do so again this year at 8/11, ahead of Edwardstone (6/4) and Blue Lord (6/1).

Day Three has not one but two featured races, the first is the Festival Trophy over a distance of about 2 miles and 4½ furlongs. Last year Allaho made it back-to-back wins in the Festival Trophy, can he make it a hat-trick in 2023? He’s the favourite at 5/4 ahead of Blue Lord 5/1 and Nicky Henderson’s Shishkin at 6/1.

The Gold Cup

The Festival’s crowning glory is undoubtedly on Day Four, the final day when the Gold Cup takes centre stage. The steeplechase is the most prestigious of all National Hunt events and it is sometimes referred to as the Blue Riband of jump-racing. Its roll of honour features the names of such chasers as Arkle, Best Mate, Golden Miller, Kauto Star, Denman and Mill House.

Last year the Gold Cup was won by A Plus Tard. The winning jockey, Rachael Blackmore, made history as the first female jockey to win the event.

However, at the time of writing, A Plus Tard is only the third favourite to claim the Gold Cup in 2023 at 9/1 behind L’Homme Presse at 7/1 and Galopin Des Champs at 6/4.

Can England establish their new Test identity?

If you’d like to watch England play South Africa this summer, you can join us in ICON at Lord’s, Emirates Old Trafford and The Kia Oval.

Test Cricket is back

As the domestic, short form cricket season has once again grabbed our attentions and filled our TV screens during the stifling height of a record British summer, we now focus back on test cricket. With four match wins from four since Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum took the reigns, there’s a real buzz around England’s development and chances for a strong performance and win for the Ashes in 2023.

England v South Africa – The history of the rivalry

England and South Africa have battled on the field for over 130 years, with England winning the majority of Test Series up until the 1960’s. More recently, England have continued to have the upper hand with three closely fought series wins for the Basil D’Oliveira Trophy. Dolly’s (as Basil was known) story is quite something, his life and cricket career going through an incredible rollercoaster, often bound by political influences out of his control. He passed away in 2011 and ever since that day, England and South Africa have played for a trophy in his honour.

Basil was an important and decisive player in the history of cricket. For different reasons, Ben Stokes may feature just as heavily. As the new Test Cricket captain, Stokes has made an explosive start, with four wins out of four with an aggressive style that evaded Root in his later years as captain.

It seems no major run totals are safe in 2022 and every run chase, no matter how ludicrous it would have been in Dolly’s era, is impossible.

England’s Summer Test Form

England’s 3-0 series win over New Zealand in June was more than just a whitewash win, it was an identity stamp delivered by Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, the new hot duo of captaincy and coaching.

The thrill, anticipation and hope has quickly been restored in England with Joe Root stepping aside after a string of poor team performances. Root firmly backed Stokes to replace him and rewarded his new skipper with great individual form, alongside Bairstow, Pope, Foakes, Potts and others throughout the first international cricket of the summer.

New Zealand were the best test team in the world on paper at the time after winning the inaugural World Test Championship against India in 2021 so the emphatic achievement by England should not be underestimated. The hope of a new dawn for English test cricket was solidified by the final match of a delayed 5 test match series against India, where Bairstow and Root shone once more to secure a win and a series win of 2-2.

England’s 1st Test Selection

As expected, England revert back to a team that have brilliantly so far this summer, with Foakes the only change, coming in for Billings after he missed out against India due to covid. Zak Crawley, Alex Lees, Ollie Pope and Joe Root will be looking to secure big scores, with the formidable Bairstow likely to be in just behind.

Anderson and Broad continue to be picked to deliver with the ball, backed up by the improving Jack Leach, Matthew Potts and Ben Foakes. Captain Stokes when deciding his team “It was quite an easy decision based on our previous four performances.”

Premier League – Week Two Highlights

Take a look at our range of Premier League hospitality for the 2022/23 season

Harry Kane’s last-minute equaliser earned Spurs a draw at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea and Spurs played in a dramatic London Derby at Stamford Bridge on Sunday where a last-minute goal in stoppage time from Harry Kane took Tottenham from behind for a 2-2 draw.

Thomas Tuchel’s side dominated the first half and earned a 19th minute goal from their new summer signing Kalidou Kouliably after he powered home a volley from Marc Cucurella’s perfectly crossed corner.

Spurs were struggling to make an impression until the second half when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg managed to equalize.

Controversy sparked however when referee Anthony Taylor failed to penalise Rodrigo Bentancur for a challenge on Kai Havertz, which brought fury to the two managers, Tuchel and Conte, who both went face-to-face and ended up receiving yellow cards.

After the game restored, Chelsea regained the lead when a pass from Raheem Sterling found the feet of Reece James and celebrations at Stamford Bridge were soaring.

Chelsea couldn’t see the game out however and a header from Harry Kane in stoppage time took the game to a 2-2 draw.

Tempers continued to rise and at full time, Tuchel and Conte clashed once more, somewhat comically to earn red cards with a melee of players and staff arguably spoiling the fun. A great end to the weekend’s action.

Another win for Arsenal sees them second in the table

Man City signing Gabriel Jesus scored two goals for Arsenal in an entertaining encounter at the Emirates Stadium.

The Brazilian striker took his Premier League total from six goals to eight in his past nine appearances with two goals scored before half time.

Early into the second half came a glimmer of hope for Leicester when William Saliba scored an own goal. Shortly after, Granit Xhaka restored Arsenal’s two goal lead once again finding the back of Danny Ward’s net bringing the score to 3-1.

James Maddison found the bottom left hand corner with a right footed shot from a difficult angle to put Leicester back in it in the 74th minute, but it was Martinelli with a shot from outside the box assisted by Jesus to seal the deal for Arsenal 4-2.

Four goals for Man City secures them the top spot

The Premier League champions produced a blistering display the Etihad Stadium winning 4-0 against Bournemouth and putting them at the top of the table.

Dominating since kick-off, City took no time in putting the ball away in the first half with an opener from Gundogan setting the tone for the blues. An impressive strike from Kevin De Bruyne took the tally to 2-0 as he bent the ball into the bottom corner with the outside of his boot. Phil Foden made sure of the points before half time with a shot that Bournemouth keeper Mark Travers couldn’t keep out.

The cherries remained the weaker side into the second half, and although City couldn’t plot another goal themselves, an own goal from Jefferson Lerma took the score to a breezy 4-0 for Pep Guardiola’s side.

City top the Premier League table maintaining their 100 per cent start to the season, while Bournemouth take their first loss putting them in the tenth position.

Man United shocker puts them 4 goals behind and bottom of the table

Was it Brentford’s solid play or United’s shocking performance behind the humiliating 4-0 result against Man United at the Gtech Community Stadium?

Brentford scored four goals in the first 35 minutes of the game, leaving United supporters stunned as they continue their losing streak.

A strike from Josh Dasilva put the hosts ahead when his shot couldn’t be saved by David de Gea. Mathias Jenson doubled the lead shortly after when he dispossessed Christian Eriksen, following with goals from Ben Mee and Bryan Mbeumo to put them 4-0 up.

The defeat comes as United’s seventh in a row away from home in their worst run since 1936, and while Brentford will be celebrating their historic win, United boss Erik ten Hag faces the challenging task of picking up his players in time for the visit of Liverpool to Old Trafford next Monday.

Aston Villa and Everton managers came face to face for the first time since their old days playing against each other in Chelsea v Liverpool games.

Both sides had opened their season on a loss, but it was Gerrard’s team who got their first win of the campaign with a dominant display at Villa Park.

Aston Villa looked the more dominant side in the first half and got their breakthrough when Ollie Watkins, making his first start of the season, found Danny Ings inside the box and put them 1-0 up.

Everton, still lacking a recognised striker, did not manage a shot on target in the first half.

It wasn’t until the closing stages that the next goal came, when Buendia scored from another good play by Villa.

Lucas Digne turned a cross into his own net to give Everton hope and take away Villa’s clean sheet, but it was the Toffees who held on and gained the three points.

Dean Henderson saves a Declan Rice penalty to secure Forest their first Prem win since 1999

West Ham missed several chances in the first half when Pablo Fornals hit the crossbar, followed by a goal being disallowed and Kurt Zouma’s header being cleared off the line.

Benrahma managed to find the net for Nottingham Forest putting them in front and the home side’s celebrations went wild.

West Ham had an opportunity to pull it back when Scott McKenna took a handball inside the box. Declan Rice’s penalty was saved by Dean Henderson to deny West Ham an equaliser and it was Forest who walked away with the three points and a victory to remember.

Premier League- first week run down

Man City take the early title advantage on week one

The reigning champions Manchester City began the defence of their 2021/22 title and wasted no time in showing they will be the team to beat once again this season, beating the Hammers away 2-0.

Erling Haaland made his Manchester City Premier League debut, scoring two goals and winning man of the match, demonstrating the huge threat he will pose this season.

West Ham suffered an early blow as goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was substituted due to injury midway through the first half. New permanent signing Areola couldn’t react quick enough to Haaland’s dash, leading to a penalty for the blues. Haaland grabbed the ball, demanded he took it and slotted it home just nine minutes before half-time.

The second goal came in the 65th minute with a defence-splitting pass from Kevin De Bruyne into the feet of Haaland where he applied the finishing touch into the far corner. I’m sure we’ll be see that combination plenty of times this season and what looked like a difficult game on paper, was routine for City.

Liverpool drop points against newly promoted Fulham

A frustrating afternoon for Liverpool as they failed to take the three points away at Craven Cottage leaving them with a 2-2 draw.

Fulham played some splendid football, keeping the reds in their own half for the first 10 minutes of the game. Fulham opened the scoring as Aleksandar Mitrovic got the better of Trent Alexander-Arnold to head them ahead after meeting a superb cross by Kenny Tete.

In a thrilling match, Liverpool substitute Nunez marked his Premier League debut by equalising with a close-range flick before Fulham restored the lead from the penalty spot after Mitrovic was fouled by Virgil van Dijk.

This meant Liverpool had ended a run of 51 Premier League matches without conceding a penalty, the longest ongoing sequence in the competition.

A late leveller by Salah stopped Fulham from taking the win, but Klopp’s side will have plenty to work on if they want to get back to their top spot in the league table.

Arsenal can gain early momentum

Arsenal began the season with a solid victory at Selhurst Park on the opening night of the Premier League, securing a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace. After losing their opening three games last season (well documented on a certain TV series just released), the early indication is that Arsenal may gain some early momentum into the season.

Mikel Arteta’s team were rewarded for an excellent start as Gabriel Martinelli scored the opener 20 minutes in to the first half from a perfect cross from new Man City recruit, Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Ramsdale had to be alert to divert Odsonne Edouard’s close-range header away from goal from what was Palace’s first attempt on goal just before half time. The home side put substantial palace on Arsenal’s defence, but Saliba and Gabriel in particular stood strong to keep them out.

Palace went on to concede an unfortunate own goal when Bukayo Saka’s cross was diverted past the keeper by Marc Guehi with a poor attempt at a clearance, giving Arsenal a 2-0 victory.

Spurs could be the real deal this season

Tottenham won an impressive 4-1 to Southampton getting their Premier League off to a flying start.

Spurs fell behind in the 12th minute when Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse volleyed the ball into the ground and watched it bounce over Hugo Lloris. In previous seasons, Tottenham may have taken some time to bounce back from an early deficit, but from that moment it was all the North London side.

Ryan Sessegnon equalised from a header making his first Premier League goal for Spurs and then Eric Dier then went on to meet Son Heung-min’s cross with a low, flicked header into the far corner.

Tottenham were playing with confidence in the second half where a shocking Mohammed Salisu own goal and a calm Kulusevski finish secured an easy 4-1 victory.

Were Tottenham that good or is it Southampton’s lack of quality that determined the rest? It’s Chelsea v Tottenham next week, a real test for both sides.

Early signs of struggle for Everton

Chelsea opened the Premier League season with a 1-0 win at Goodison Park after a penalty from Jorginho sealed the deal in the first half.

Thomas Tuchel started both new summer signings Kalidou Koulibaly and Raheem Stirling, neither however could find the back of the net in their Chelsea debuts.

Everton posed little threat in their attack, with the sale of Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin absent with injury they lacked a recognised striker.

Ben Godfrey faced a serious early injury in the first half from a challenge by Kai Havertz leaving him with a fractured leg.

Chelsea did not seem to cause Everton too many serious problems, but Thomas Tuchel’s side will be delighted to start the season off with a win.

Change of management but no improvements from Man United

Manchester United have started the season off with a shocking 2-1 defeat at home to Brighton condemning Erik ten Hag to a losing start as manager.

It was Pascal Gross’s first-half double that stunned Old Trafford giving the Seaguls a 2-0 lead. Not even the second-half introduction of Cristiano Ronaldo could deny Brighton, although United did threaten a comeback when a scramble inside the box ended with Alexis Mac Allister putting the ball into his own net after an under pressure pass from the goalkeeper.

In nine previous league visits, Brighton had managed only one draw, so this victory was historic.

Bournemouth add further misery to Aston Villa’s poor form

Premier League newcomers Bournemouth got their season off to a dream start with a deserved 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at the Vitality Stadium.

The game’s opening goal came only two minutes in as Jefferson Lerma scored the quickest goal on matchday one by a promoted side in Premier League history. With Villa temporarily down to ten men due to left-back Lucas Digne coming off the pitch due to a nosebleed, the Cherries were able to convert a corner and put them 1-0 up.

After half time the second goal came in the 80th minute from Kieffer Moore scoring his first top-flight goal to give them a comfortable lead.

Leeds and Newcastle start with home wins, whilst Leicester draw against Brentford

After just surviving last season and losing Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha, Leeds were desperate to start off positively and they did just that, beating Wolves 2-1.

Newcastle saw off the long awaited Premier League return of Nottingham Forest 2-0 as Eddie Howe and the free-spending Georgie club look set to have a strong season.

Finally Leicester and Brentford shared the spoils with a 2-2 draw. Brentford made a terrific comeback from 2-0 down, whilst Leicester have clubs circling around their stars players as their financial struggles continue to be rumoured.
