The best sport and music moments of 2024

As 2024 comes to an end, it’s time to reflect on a whirlwind 12 months in both sport and music. We’ve enjoyed yet another thrilling year, with countless unforgettable moments.

While there are plenty that we could have included, we’ve whittled it down to our five favourites.

Late Euros drama for England

England fans have become used to reaching the latter stages of international tournaments of late, so expectations were high heading into Euro 2024 earlier this year. While Gareth Southgate’s side reached yet another final, they sadly fell at the final hurdle, losing to Spain in the final.

Despite that heartbreak, there were still some huge moments for the Three Lions, with some unforgettable late goals along the way. England bored their way through the group stage to set up a round of 16 tie with Slovakia and they looked to be on their way out as the game reached its dying embers.

But Jude Bellingham had other ideas and after a phenomenal debut season at Real Madrid, he continued his dream season by scoring a dramatic 95th minute bicycle kick equaliser to take the game to extra-time. Harry Kane headed in a winner and England were into the quarter-finals.

Another late goal from Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka led to England ultimately beating Switzerland on penalties and then, in their semi-final clash with the Netherlands, another period of extra-time loomed. However, in yet another late moment of magic, Ollie Watkins smashed in a winner and England reached the final.

The return of Oasis

After splitting up in 2009, music fans have been begging for Oasis to get back together for the best part of 15 years. As time went on, those calls became more and more desperate, with many giving up hope that the feuding Gallagher brothers would ever reunite.

However, in an announcement that shocked the world, Oasis confirmed that they’d be returning for a long-awaited tour next year. The Britpop band are set to play five dates in their hometown Manchester and seven at Wembley, as well as gigs in Cardiff, Edinburgh, Dublin and plenty of other places across the globe.

More than 10 million people logged on to buy tickets, with many fans being left disappointed. Their first return gig at the Principality Stadium is next July and it’s arguably the most anticipated concert in the history of music. If you missed out or fancy watching Oasis in style, you can join us in the UK or Ireland in Engage’s exclusive hospitality areas.

Keely Hodgkinson strikes gold in Paris

20 years after Dame Kelly Holmes did the double in the 800m and 1500m in Athens, Team GB crowned another queen of the track in Paris this summer. Keely Hodgkinson was targeting gold after claiming silver in Tokyo last time out and she didn’t disappoint.

The 22-year-old raced to glory in an emphatic performance, leaving reigning world champion Mary Moraa in her wake. Hodgkinson’s incredible feat saw her crowned the BBC Sports Personality of the Year earlier this week.

And the runner wasn’t Team GB’s only star at this year’s games. Alex Yee mounted a remarkable comeback to claim gold in the triathlon, while paralympian Dame Sarah Storey picked up another two cycling gold medals to take her career tally to 19.

Girls take over in pop music revival

It was a huge 2024 for pop music, with some of the world’s biggest stars enjoying their best year yet. Taylor Swift finally waved goodbye to her iconic The Eras Tour, playing the final of 149 shows in Vancouver earlier this month.

The 20-month tour became the highest-grossing in history and the first to gross more than $1 billion, with more than 10 million people attending around the world. And Swift wasn’t the only female pop superstar to taste success this year.

Sabrina Carpenter, who was a support act in some of the earlier The Eras Tour shows, enjoyed a breakthrough year. Her album ‘Short n’ Sweet’, which featured the hit single ‘Espresso’, became the first to ever debut at the top of the Billboard 200.

Elsewhere, the likes of Chappell Roan and Charlie XCX became musical icons this year, while Dua Lipa stole the show at Glastonbury as she headlined the Pyramid Stage on the Friday night.

Luke Littler bounces back from World Championship defeat

We’re currently in the midst of the PDC World Darts Championship but if we rewind 12 months, Luke Littler was taking his debut tournament by storm. Aged just 16, the 66/1 shot went on a remarkable run to reach the final.

He suffered heartbreak as he eventually lost to fellow Brit Luke Humphries but the youngster, who was the SPOTY runner-up, has bounced back and enjoyed a standout year.

Littler is the reigning Premier League Darts, Grand Slam and World Series Finals champion. He’s still hoping to add the World Championship title to his collection and, with his 18th birthday still a few weeks away, we’ve got no doubt that he’ll have plenty to his name when he eventually calls it a day.

The best comedy shows and music gigs to see in December

We’ve already let you know the biggest comedians going on tour in 2025, but if you can’t wait until then, we’ve got you covered. There’s plenty of comedy to look forward to before the end of the year, as well as a whole host of concerts taking place, so why not treat yourself to a night of entertainment before Christmas?

Jack and Michael Whitehall

Monday 9th December – Brentwood Centre, Brentwood
Friday 13th December – Bristol Beacon, Bristol
Saturday 21st December – The Civic Hall, Wolverhampton
Sunday 22nd December – The Centaur, Cheltenham

While not technically stand-up comedy, you’re still guaranteed to be laughing at Jack and Michael Whitehall’s live show. The father and son duo are known for their travel shows, where Jack’s childish humour combined with his dad’s dry wit are a match made in heaven.

Expect an evening of conversation packed full of stories of their travels, reminiscing of family encounters and maybe one or two arguments – but don’t worry, Jack’s mother Hilary is on hand to act as referee.

Formula 1

Tempers flared and emotions were high as the penultimate race of the 2024 Formula 1 season took place in Qatar at the weekend. Max Verstappen was victorious once again in Qatar having sealed his fourth Championship a week earlier in Las Vegas. However, the drama wasn’t finished when the drivers crossed the line. Verstappen claimed he had ‘lost all respect’ for George Rusell after the Dutchman was handed a penalty and was upset by Russell’s behaviour in the stewards’ room. Meanwhile, in the race for the Constructors’ Championship there was controversy, with Lando Norris handed a penalty for speeding under yellow flags. As a result of the penalty, McLaren haven’t quite secured the title and it will be all to play for in the final race of the season.

The second week in December marks the finale of the Formula 1 Season as drivers make their way to the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. If you’re stuck about where to go or need a nudge in the right direction, we’ve put together a list of all the best sporting weekends away, as well as details on how to make the most of our brand-new hospitality experience.

Barcelona – Spanish Grand Prix

There’s nothing like a weekend in the sunshine watching Formula One and locations don’t get much better than Barcelona. The iconic Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is well known on the circuit and was the scene of Max Verstappen’s first ever Grand Prix win back in 2016.

The course has been hosting F1 races since opening way back in 1991 ahead of the Olympics taking place the following year. Located just 15 miles from central Barcelona, it’s the ideal location to combine a racing weekend next May with a sun-soaked city break.

Walk down the iconic Las Ramblas strip, visit the stunning Sagrada Familia and then enjoy a delicious cocktail on the beach. And the best part? We’ll do all the admin for you! With our exclusive new ROAM hospitality packages, you can combine unrivalled F1 hospitality with a luxury three-night stay in a five star Barcelona hotel. Enquire today to book your place.

Lake Como – Italian Grand Prix

The F1 calendar is known for visiting the most beautiful places in the world and the Italian Grand Prix is no different. Located just outside Milan, the Monza racecourse is just a short drive from the picturesque Lake Como.

A weekend taking in the racing action allows you to explore the high-end shops and cultural joys of Milan, relax in the stunning surroundings of the lake and experience all the thrills of the Italian Grand Prix.

The course is steeped in history and at more than 100 years old, it’s the oldest circuit in mainland Europe. Just like Barcelona, with our ROAM experience you can enjoy premium hospitality for the Saturday and Sunday of next September’s Grand Prix weekend, as well as a gorgeous weekend stay in Lake Como.

Monaco Grand Prix

Nothing says luxury like Monaco, which is handy if you’re a Formula One fan looking for a classy weekend away. One of the fanciest cities on the circuit is also a beautiful place to spend a weekend, so why not treat yourself to the Monaco Grand Prix next May?

You can see how the other half live by marvelling at the super yachts, browsing the designer shops and tasting the best food money can buy at one of Monaco’s many Michelin-starred restaurants.

Charles Leclerc won the race in his hometown for the first time this year and his new Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton will be hoping to follow suit in 2025. You can enjoy the iconic race from the best seats in the house with Engage’s exclusive hospitality packages.

Dublin – Ireland Rugby

It’s not just Formula One that offers the perfect chance for a weekend away. Rugby travels all over the world, with countries like Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa famous for their impressive teams and beautiful locations.

While they may be a bit far for a quick trip, luckily, it’s only a short flight from the UK to Dublin, where you’re guaranteed a good time. As well as incredible rugby, you can head to the home of Guinness for a proper pint, great local food and traditional Irish music.

Dublin is also known for its beautiful castle, while it’s just a stone’s throw from gorgeous countryside and the coast. Why not combine a trip to the capital of the Emerald Isle with watching top-class rugby?

Ireland host New Zealand, Argentina and Australia at the Aviva Stadium in the Autumn Nations series this November, with plenty of hospitality packages available with Engage. Plus, they’ll be looking to win their third Six Nations crown in a row next spring, with home matches against England and France to look forward to.

New York – US Open

A bit further afield but certainly doable for a quick getaway is New York. Around an eight-hour flight from London, the Big Apple is one of the most visited cities in the world, with so much to do – and that’s before you even consider the sports you can see.

Visit Times Square, the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building – plus you could enjoy a stroll around the iconic Central Park. New York famously has huge teams in all the major American sports. You could see the New York Yankees play baseball, the New York Giants in American football or the New York Knicks shooting hoops in basketball.

Or, if you fancy going sooner rather than later, why not hop across the pond for the US Open, which gets underway at the end of August? Head to the iconic grounds of Flushing Meadows and make the most of our hospitality options. If you’re lucky, you might just see Novak Djokovic finally win his 25th Grand Slam title and overtake Margaret Court to become the all-time leader in major titles.

There are plenty more races to go and racing fans in the Middle East will get to see the decisive moments at the tail end of the season. The current campaign will come to a close in December, with the Qatar Grand Prix on 1st December, followed by the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on 8th December.

Verstappen won both races last year on his way to winning the final seven events of the season. He’ll be looking to repeat the feat this time around and claim his fourth consecutive F1 championship.

Boxing

Combat sports have taken the Middle East by storm in recent years, including plenty of thrilling boxing fights that have taken place in Saudi Arabia. Next up is Tyson Fury’s highly-anticipated bout with unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.

The pair are set to come face-to-face in Riyadh on Saturday 18th May, with Fury looking to inflict Usyk’s first ever professional defeat. The Ukrainian has won all 17 of his fights, including twice against Anthony Joshua. One of those fights took place in Saudi Arabia, which was also the setting for Fury’s victory against UFC star Francis Ngannou last October.

The undercard of Fury vs Usyk is packed full of boxing stars, including Jai Opetaia. The Australian is set to face Mairis Briedis to defend the cruiserweight belts he won from him two years ago. Elsewhere, Joe Cordina will face Anthony Cacace in a featherweight world title clash.

Golf

Much like with Formula One, the golf season’s climax takes place in the Middle East with the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. As the ‘Race to Dubai’ comes to a close, the world’s top players will compete to be crowned the DP Tour champion from 14th to 19th November.

Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard came out on top last year, beating runners up Tommy Fleetwood, Viktor Hovland and Matt Wallace. Previous winners include Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy, though the latter hasn’t tasted victory in Dubai since 2015.

The competition comes a week after the penultimate event of the tour, which sees the Abu Dhabi Championship get underway from 7th to 10th November.

Tennis

The NextGen ATP Finals returns to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia in December and will pit the tennis stars of the future against one another. The competition is open to the best players aged 20 or under and will take place from 18th to 22nd December.

Carlos Alcaraz won the NextGen finals back in 2021 and it took him less than a year to win the US Open. The Spaniard went on to claim his second Grand Slam last summer, beating Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. Similarly, Jannik Sinner won the NextGen final back in 2019 and earned his maiden Grand Slam at the Australian Open earlier this year.

Football

The Asian Cup took place in Qatar earlier this year and the hosts made home advantage count as they went all the way, winning the competition for the second time in a row. They beat Jordan 3-1 in the final, with Golden Boot winner Akram Afiff scoring a hat-trick of penalties to secure the trophy.

The Saudi Pro League has gone from strength to strength since splashing the cash to bring in some of the world’s biggest football stars. The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Karim Benzema, Riyad Mahrez and Sadio Mane have all swapped Europe for the Middle East.

Al-Hilal, whose squad includes Kalidou Koulibaly, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ruben Neves, are currently 12 points clear of Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr at the top of the league. The pair will meet in the semi-final of the Saudi Super Cup next week.

Cricket

Last summer we were treated to one of the most thrilling Ashes series in history and, thankfully, there’s loads more cricket action to look forward to this year.

England face both the West Indies and Sri Lanka in home Test series, with Ben Stokes and co. looking to bounce back from a disappointing trip to India earlier this year. They’ll also be taking on Pakistan and Australia in white ball series either side of the T20 World Cup in June.

Domestically, The Hundred continues, with the final taking place at Lord’s in August. Meanwhile, the T20 Blast gets back underway in June if you fancy some high-energy action with a party atmosphere.

British Grand Prix

The midpoint of the Formula One season sees the British Grand Prix once again take place at Silverstone, its permanent home since 1987.

While we all love getting presents and indulging in one too many mince pies, everybody knows that the best thing about the festive period is the jam-packed calendar of sporting events to look forward to.

Thankfully, there’s plenty to enjoy this year, including football, tennis and darts.

Festive football in the Premier League

The Christmas period is always one of the busiest parts of the football calendar and this year is no different, with a bumper Premier League schedule on the horizon. As we edge towards the halfway point in the campaign, the league table is starting to take shape and some clubs are counting down the days until the transfer window reopens.

Defending champions Manchester City currently lead the way but the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham are hot on their tail. Jurgen Klopp’s side face a testing festive fixture list, with clashes against Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle all within the space of two weeks.

Spurs take on Everton two days before Christmas, which could be a huge contest at both ends of the table following the Merseyside club’s recent points deduction. Meanwhile, Chelsea face a trip to Wolves on Christmas Eve and Man United host surprise package Aston Villa on Boxing Day.

Elsewhere, following their Champions League win City have a mid-season trip to Saudi Arabia to take part in the Club World Cup.

The Ultimate Tennis Showdown heads to London

After three showpiece tournaments throughout 2023, the Ultimate Tennis Showdown is on its way to London for the competition’s inaugural Grand Final. For three days in mid-December, eight of the top ranking players will go head-to-head at the ExCel in a bid to become the ultimate champion.

The UTS gives tennis a modern twist. Instead of your usual scoring format, players face off during quarters of eight minutes. Second serves are a thing of the past and players get just one added to their total each time they score a point.

The Grand Final takes place following UTS tournaments in Los Angeles, Frankfurt and Seoul this year. Andrey Rublev and Holger Rune, who are both ranked in the top 10, are set to compete, along with Casper Rudd, Jack Draper and Gael Monfils.

The event runs from Friday 15th to Sunday 17th December and you can watch the action from the best seats in the house with our exclusive hospitality packages.

The World Darts Championships returns to Ally Pally

Christmas wouldn’t quite be the same without a daily darts extravaganza from Alexandra Palace. The World Darts Championship moved to north London in 2008 and it returns in December, with Michael Smith looking to defend his title

After losing the 2022 final, Smith bounced back last year to edge Michael van Gerwen 7-4 to claim the Championship for the first time. Van Gerwen will be seeking revenge as he looks to win the competition for a fourth time.

This year’s tournament gets underway on 15th December, with the final taking place on 2nd January. 32 players will lock horns at the famous oche, with a whopping £2.5 million prize pot to be won.

The best in music and comedy

It’s not just sport that’s on the agenda this winter, with plenty of music and comedy to look forward to. Dust off your santa hat and get your dancing shoes on because the Jingle Bell Ball is back at the O2 on 9th and 10th December, where Alicia Keys, Busted, Take That, Rita Ora and loads more will be taking to the stage for a blockbuster weekend.

They’re not the only superstars gigging at the O2 as Madonna, Tom Jones and Madness are all performing over the festive period. And if you’re in the mood for a Christmas giggle, Peter Kay’s monthly residency at the O2 takes place on 16th December.
