A very Merry Christmas to you all from Engage Hospitality! Here at Engage we know how much you love your sport, just the same as we do and perhaps you’re looking for something to fill the time while you let your Christmas Dinner settle. This is your run down of all the sports and traditions taking place on Christmas Day!
The traditional Christmas Day sports in the UK have all but petered out now. Many sports now opt for a Boxing Day showing of sport rather than the big day itself to allow athletes the time to relax with their families. In fact the last time football was played in England on Christmas Day was back in 1965. Scottish football on Christmas Day lasted slightly longer but eventually was moved to Boxing Day in the 1970s marking an absence of sport in the UK on the 25th December.
However, in other countries this year, there will still be plenty of action to keep you entertained with NFL and NBA action coming up.
Kicking off your afternoon on Christmas Day will be the New York Knicks as they take on the San Antonio Spurs at 17:00 GMT in the NBA. The NBA is renowned for its Christmas Day games and this year is no different with a triple header in store for basketball fans around the world. Following the first game, the Dallas Mavericks will host the Minnesota Timberwolves at 19:30. The Mavericks were runners up in the Championship game last season and are in the hunt for their first NBA title since 2011. They currently sit 4th in the Western Conference table with many interested to see if they can challenge again this season.
The final NBA game of Christmas Day will see reigning Champions Boston Celtics welcome the Philadelphia 76ers. The Massachusetts based side are the most successful team in NBA history having appeared in 23 NBA Finals, winning 18 titles. Currently second in the Eastern Conference table, they look set on winning an astonishing 19th title as they hunt for another victory on Christmas Day.
Elsewhere in America on the 25th December, the NFL is also boasting an exciting day of action. The Pittsburgh Steelers take on reigning champions the Kansas City Chiefs at 18:00 GMT. The Chiefs have been dominating American Football in recent years winning the Superbowl in 2019, 2022 and 2023. With 13 wins in the regular campaign this year, they will be keen to maintain their superiority over the festive season in the hope of winning a third consecutive Superbowl.
At 21:30, the Houston Texans will host the Baltimore Ravens to mark the end of the festive action in the NFL. The Ravens are looking for their first win at the Superbowl since 2012, however, a tricky season so far sees them with 9 victories and 5 defeats.
If the NBA and NFL action still isn’t enough for you (and you manage to stay awake!) there is a big cricket game due to start at 23:30 GMT on Christmas Day. As a result of the Australian time difference, Australia take on India in the penultimate match of a 5 game test series. With the series currently tied at a tense 1-1, the Aussies will be looking to treat their fans to a festive victory. Ahead of the Ashes ‘Down Under’ next year, it will be a good indication of how Australia may line up as England look to take home the famous Urn in 2025. If you can fight the tiredness from the Christmas Day thrills, you will certainly want to stay up for this one.
With some fantastic sporting prospects coming up on the big day, what will you choose to watch? Like what you see on Christmas Day? Watch the NFL, NBA and England Cricket live with Engage Hospitality, offering wonderful packages for you to watch your favourite sports in action in 2025!
