Premier League – Week Two Highlights

Take a look at our range of Premier League hospitality for the 2022/23 season

Harry Kane’s last-minute equaliser earned Spurs a draw at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea and Spurs played in a dramatic London Derby at Stamford Bridge on Sunday where a last-minute goal in stoppage time from Harry Kane took Tottenham from behind for a 2-2 draw.

Thomas Tuchel’s side dominated the first half and earned a 19th minute goal from their new summer signing Kalidou Kouliably after he powered home a volley from Marc Cucurella’s perfectly crossed corner.

Spurs were struggling to make an impression until the second half when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg managed to equalize.

Controversy sparked however when referee Anthony Taylor failed to penalise Rodrigo Bentancur for a challenge on Kai Havertz, which brought fury to the two managers, Tuchel and Conte, who both went face-to-face and ended up receiving yellow cards.

After the game restored, Chelsea regained the lead when a pass from Raheem Sterling found the feet of Reece James and celebrations at Stamford Bridge were soaring.

Chelsea couldn’t see the game out however and a header from Harry Kane in stoppage time took the game to a 2-2 draw.

Tempers continued to rise and at full time, Tuchel and Conte clashed once more, somewhat comically to earn red cards with a melee of players and staff arguably spoiling the fun. A great end to the weekend’s action.

Another win for Arsenal sees them second in the table

Man City signing Gabriel Jesus scored two goals for Arsenal in an entertaining encounter at the Emirates Stadium.

The Brazilian striker took his Premier League total from six goals to eight in his past nine appearances with two goals scored before half time.

Early into the second half came a glimmer of hope for Leicester when William Saliba scored an own goal. Shortly after, Granit Xhaka restored Arsenal’s two goal lead once again finding the back of Danny Ward’s net bringing the score to 3-1.

James Maddison found the bottom left hand corner with a right footed shot from a difficult angle to put Leicester back in it in the 74th minute, but it was Martinelli with a shot from outside the box assisted by Jesus to seal the deal for Arsenal 4-2.

Four goals for Man City secures them the top spot

The Premier League champions produced a blistering display the Etihad Stadium winning 4-0 against Bournemouth and putting them at the top of the table.

Dominating since kick-off, City took no time in putting the ball away in the first half with an opener from Gundogan setting the tone for the blues. An impressive strike from Kevin De Bruyne took the tally to 2-0 as he bent the ball into the bottom corner with the outside of his boot. Phil Foden made sure of the points before half time with a shot that Bournemouth keeper Mark Travers couldn’t keep out.

The cherries remained the weaker side into the second half, and although City couldn’t plot another goal themselves, an own goal from Jefferson Lerma took the score to a breezy 4-0 for Pep Guardiola’s side.

City top the Premier League table maintaining their 100 per cent start to the season, while Bournemouth take their first loss putting them in the tenth position.

Man United shocker puts them 4 goals behind and bottom of the table

Was it Brentford’s solid play or United’s shocking performance behind the humiliating 4-0 result against Man United at the Gtech Community Stadium?

Brentford scored four goals in the first 35 minutes of the game, leaving United supporters stunned as they continue their losing streak.

A strike from Josh Dasilva put the hosts ahead when his shot couldn’t be saved by David de Gea. Mathias Jenson doubled the lead shortly after when he dispossessed Christian Eriksen, following with goals from Ben Mee and Bryan Mbeumo to put them 4-0 up.

The defeat comes as United’s seventh in a row away from home in their worst run since 1936, and while Brentford will be celebrating their historic win, United boss Erik ten Hag faces the challenging task of picking up his players in time for the visit of Liverpool to Old Trafford next Monday.

Steven Gerrard gets one over on his old midfield rival Frank Lampard

Aston Villa and Everton managers came face to face for the first time since their old days playing against each other in Chelsea v Liverpool games.

Both sides had opened their season on a loss, but it was Gerrard’s team who got their first win of the campaign with a dominant display at Villa Park.

Aston Villa looked the more dominant side in the first half and got their breakthrough when Ollie Watkins, making his first start of the season, found Danny Ings inside the box and put them 1-0 up.

Everton, still lacking a recognised striker, did not manage a shot on target in the first half.

It wasn’t until the closing stages that the next goal came, when Buendia scored from another good play by Villa.

Lucas Digne turned a cross into his own net to give Everton hope and take away Villa’s clean sheet, but it was the Toffees who held on and gained the three points.

Dean Henderson saves a Declan Rice penalty to secure Forest their first Prem win since 1999

West Ham missed several chances in the first half when Pablo Fornals hit the crossbar, followed by a goal being disallowed and Kurt Zouma’s header being cleared off the line.

Benrahma managed to find the net for Nottingham Forest putting them in front and the home side’s celebrations went wild.

West Ham had an opportunity to pull it back when Scott McKenna took a handball inside the box. Declan Rice’s penalty was saved by Dean Henderson to deny West Ham an equaliser and it was Forest who walked away with the three points and a victory to remember.

Premier League- first week run down

Man City take the early title advantage on week one

The reigning champions Manchester City began the defence of their 2021/22 title and wasted no time in showing they will be the team to beat once again this season, beating the Hammers away 2-0.

Erling Haaland made his Manchester City Premier League debut, scoring two goals and winning man of the match, demonstrating the huge threat he will pose this season.

West Ham suffered an early blow as goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was substituted due to injury midway through the first half. New permanent signing Areola couldn’t react quick enough to Haaland’s dash, leading to a penalty for the blues. Haaland grabbed the ball, demanded he took it and slotted it home just nine minutes before half-time.

The second goal came in the 65th minute with a defence-splitting pass from Kevin De Bruyne into the feet of Haaland where he applied the finishing touch into the far corner. I’m sure we’ll be see that combination plenty of times this season and what looked like a difficult game on paper, was routine for City.

Liverpool drop points against newly promoted Fulham

A frustrating afternoon for Liverpool as they failed to take the three points away at Craven Cottage leaving them with a 2-2 draw.

Fulham played some splendid football, keeping the reds in their own half for the first 10 minutes of the game. Fulham opened the scoring as Aleksandar Mitrovic got the better of Trent Alexander-Arnold to head them ahead after meeting a superb cross by Kenny Tete.

In a thrilling match, Liverpool substitute Nunez marked his Premier League debut by equalising with a close-range flick before Fulham restored the lead from the penalty spot after Mitrovic was fouled by Virgil van Dijk.

This meant Liverpool had ended a run of 51 Premier League matches without conceding a penalty, the longest ongoing sequence in the competition.

A late leveller by Salah stopped Fulham from taking the win, but Klopp’s side will have plenty to work on if they want to get back to their top spot in the league table.

Arsenal can gain early momentum

Arsenal began the season with a solid victory at Selhurst Park on the opening night of the Premier League, securing a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace. After losing their opening three games last season (well documented on a certain TV series just released), the early indication is that Arsenal may gain some early momentum into the season.

Mikel Arteta’s team were rewarded for an excellent start as Gabriel Martinelli scored the opener 20 minutes in to the first half from a perfect cross from new Man City recruit, Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Ramsdale had to be alert to divert Odsonne Edouard’s close-range header away from goal from what was Palace’s first attempt on goal just before half time. The home side put substantial palace on Arsenal’s defence, but Saliba and Gabriel in particular stood strong to keep them out.

Palace went on to concede an unfortunate own goal when Bukayo Saka’s cross was diverted past the keeper by Marc Guehi with a poor attempt at a clearance, giving Arsenal a 2-0 victory.

Spurs could be the real deal this season

Tottenham won an impressive 4-1 to Southampton getting their Premier League off to a flying start.

Spurs fell behind in the 12th minute when Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse volleyed the ball into the ground and watched it bounce over Hugo Lloris. In previous seasons, Tottenham may have taken some time to bounce back from an early deficit, but from that moment it was all the North London side.

Ryan Sessegnon equalised from a header making his first Premier League goal for Spurs and then Eric Dier then went on to meet Son Heung-min’s cross with a low, flicked header into the far corner.

Tottenham were playing with confidence in the second half where a shocking Mohammed Salisu own goal and a calm Kulusevski finish secured an easy 4-1 victory.

Were Tottenham that good or is it Southampton’s lack of quality that determined the rest? It’s Chelsea v Tottenham next week, a real test for both sides.

Early signs of struggle for Everton

Chelsea opened the Premier League season with a 1-0 win at Goodison Park after a penalty from Jorginho sealed the deal in the first half.

Thomas Tuchel started both new summer signings Kalidou Koulibaly and Raheem Stirling, neither however could find the back of the net in their Chelsea debuts.

Everton posed little threat in their attack, with the sale of Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin absent with injury they lacked a recognised striker.

Ben Godfrey faced a serious early injury in the first half from a challenge by Kai Havertz leaving him with a fractured leg.

Chelsea did not seem to cause Everton too many serious problems, but Thomas Tuchel’s side will be delighted to start the season off with a win.

Change of management but no improvements from Man United

Manchester United have started the season off with a shocking 2-1 defeat at home to Brighton condemning Erik ten Hag to a losing start as manager.

It was Pascal Gross’s first-half double that stunned Old Trafford giving the Seaguls a 2-0 lead. Not even the second-half introduction of Cristiano Ronaldo could deny Brighton, although United did threaten a comeback when a scramble inside the box ended with Alexis Mac Allister putting the ball into his own net after an under pressure pass from the goalkeeper.

In nine previous league visits, Brighton had managed only one draw, so this victory was historic.

Bournemouth add further misery to Aston Villa’s poor form

Premier League newcomers Bournemouth got their season off to a dream start with a deserved 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at the Vitality Stadium.

The game’s opening goal came only two minutes in as Jefferson Lerma scored the quickest goal on matchday one by a promoted side in Premier League history. With Villa temporarily down to ten men due to left-back Lucas Digne coming off the pitch due to a nosebleed, the Cherries were able to convert a corner and put them 1-0 up.

After half time the second goal came in the 80th minute from Kieffer Moore scoring his first top-flight goal to give them a comfortable lead.

Leeds and Newcastle start with home wins, whilst Leicester draw against Brentford

After just surviving last season and losing Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha, Leeds were desperate to start off positively and they did just that, beating Wolves 2-1.

Newcastle saw off the long awaited Premier League return of Nottingham Forest 2-0 as Eddie Howe and the free-spending Georgie club look set to have a strong season.

Finally Leicester and Brentford shared the spoils with a 2-2 draw. Brentford made a terrific comeback from 2-0 down, whilst Leicester have clubs circling around their stars players as their financial struggles continue to be rumoured.
