Disruptions don’t scupper England’s explosiveness to secure the series
England sealed an impressive 2-1 series win against South Africa with yet another dominant display on home soil this summer at the Kia Oval. With Crawley and Lees resuming on 97-0, England required just 33 more runs heading into the final day to wrap up the series, which, despite the fall of Lees, were knocked out with minimal fuss to win convincingly by nine wickets.
South Africa storm the opener at Lord’s
When this series began at Lord’s in mid-August, many a pundit and commentator were of the opinion that the swashbuckling brand of cricket England had displayed in their 3-0 series win against New Zealand and their record breaking test win against India earlier on in the summer would not be sustainable. And, for a few days, after being put into bat first for the only time this summer, you might have been forgiven for agreeing with them. South Africa, winners by an innings and 12 runs had humbled England at “The Home of Cricket” in under three days.
Questions were once again being asked of a faltering batting line up struggling for runs with fingers pointed most notably at the opening pair of Crawley and Lees. Even Jonny Bairstow who had thus far been the darling of the English summer was wavering against a four-pronged pace attack consisting of Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje and Marco Jansen.
Stokes’ best performance as captain at Emirates Old Trafford
However, despite the embarrassing reality check inflicted upon them at Lord’s, this England side helmed by Ben Stoke and Brendan McCullum refuse to know when they are beat. Under a week later we were back underway, this time, instead of at The Home of Cricket, they were at the home of Jimmy Anderson – Emirates Old Trafford. With humid, overcast skies above, Dean Elgar the Proteas skipper, surprised everyone by opting to bat first.
Jimmy Anderson, bowling from the Jimmy Anderson end was to make Elgar regret that decision, taking 6 wickets across the match, aided by a returning Ollie Robinson (5) and Stuart Broad (4) as England cruised to an innings and 85 run victory. It was a test match to remember for Ben Stokes as well as he hit his first century since becoming England captain, scoring 103 off 163 deliveries alongside fellow centurion Ben Foakes (113 off 217) as England recaptured some of the batting form shown earlier in the summer on their way to a declaration at 415/9.
The decider goes ahead and an inspired England win in 3 days
Momentum then was with England as they headed back to London to wrap up the series win at The Kia Oval, making it 6 wins out of 7 under the captaincy of Ben Stokes this summer – a feat not achieved since 2004. If the test cricket on show earlier on in the summer was about “Baz-ball”, a new brand of positive test match cricket where caution and doubt was cast aside in favour of an attack at all odds philosophy, the South Africa series showed England to have more nuance to their game.
The Batsmen were required to dig in at times, Zak Crawley’s 38 off 101 at Old Trafford might not have caught the headlines but was an important innings regardless in steadying the ship before Stokes, Bairstow and Foakes could capitalise. England’s seam attack also proved their worth to the team with control and skill on show in equal measure as they consistently squeezed the life out of South Africa’s batting line up before striking at key moments.
Overall, in being completely different to the New Zealand and India tests from June and July, this South Africa series provided the England team and supporters with the perfect end to a superb summer, showing they can win test matches in more than one way, when only 6 months ago, it didn’t look like they could win test matches at all.
2023 The Ashes
This new-look England side will face the toughest test of all in 2023 as they welcome the oldest of enemies, Australia, in The Ashes. Dates have yet to be confirmed by The ECB but matches will take place at the same venues as in 2019 – Edgbaston, Lord’s, Headingley, Old Trafford and The Kia Oval – we can’t wait!
Ever since London hosted it’s first regular season game back in October 2007, British fans have always been teased with the possibility of a permanent NFL franchise in the country.
The Jacksonville Jaguars under the ownership of Shahid Khan, who also owns Premier League team Fulham FC, have become the adopted team for NFL fans. The Florida organisation are crossing the pond a record 9th time in 2022 and Khan has been the dominant voice in exploring the requirements to secure a spot in the NFL as the fan base in London increases for the Jags. His bid to buy Wembley in 2018 was ultimately unsuccessful, but his intentions were clear. Khan saw the business potential to bring NFL to London permanently.

Covid-19 somewhat halted the growth of NFL in the UK with 2020 matches cancelled and the thought process behind international development seems to have shifted.
The Packers complete the set for London
2022 sees the final franchise of 32 in total to play in London. The widely supported Green Bay Packers will make their London debut at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against the New York Giants in-line with the NFL’s announcement to ensure every team must play in an international match every 8 years.
Aside from the three matches in London, the NFL have strongly hinted at their future direction of growth, with matches in Munich and Mexico making up the 5 games in the 2022 International Series.
NFL are now actively looking to explore matches in varying locations, seriously hindering the logic behind a permanent team back in London.
As it stands, the appetite appears to not be there for an NFL franchise to be in London, but with tickets selling out as quick as ever for the three London matches, there’s no doubting the demand and the fanbase over in the UK.

As the domestic, short form cricket season has once again grabbed our attentions and filled our TV screens during the stifling height of a record British summer, we now focus back on test cricket. With four match wins from four since Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum took the reigns, there’s a real buzz around England’s development and chances for a strong performance and win for the Ashes in 2023.
England v South Africa – The history of the rivalry
England and South Africa have battled on the field for over 130 years, with England winning the majority of Test Series up until the 1960’s. More recently, England have continued to have the upper hand with three closely fought series wins for the Basil D’Oliveira Trophy. Dolly’s (as Basil was known) story is quite something, his life and cricket career going through an incredible rollercoaster, often bound by political influences out of his control. He passed away in 2011 and ever since that day, England and South Africa have played for a trophy in his honour.
Basil was an important and decisive player in the history of cricket. For different reasons, Ben Stokes may feature just as heavily. As the new Test Cricket captain, Stokes has made an explosive start, with four wins out of four with an aggressive style that evaded Root in his later years as captain.
It seems no major run totals are safe in 2022 and every run chase, no matter how ludicrous it would have been in Dolly’s era, is impossible.
England’s 3-0 series win over New Zealand in June was more than just a whitewash win, it was an identity stamp delivered by Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, the new hot duo of captaincy and coaching.
The thrill, anticipation and hope has quickly been restored in England with Joe Root stepping aside after a string of poor team performances. Root firmly backed Stokes to replace him and rewarded his new skipper with great individual form, alongside Bairstow, Pope, Foakes, Potts and others throughout the first international cricket of the summer.
New Zealand were the best test team in the world on paper at the time after winning the inaugural World Test Championship against India in 2021 so the emphatic achievement by England should not be underestimated. The hope of a new dawn for English test cricket was solidified by the final match of a delayed 5 test match series against India, where Bairstow and Root shone once more to secure a win and a series win of 2-2.
England’s 1st Test Selection
As expected, England revert back to a team that have brilliantly so far this summer, with Foakes the only change, coming in for Billings after he missed out against India due to covid. Zak Crawley, Alex Lees, Ollie Pope and Joe Root will be looking to secure big scores, with the formidable Bairstow likely to be in just behind.
Harry Kane’s last-minute equaliser earned Spurs a draw at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea and Spurs played in a dramatic London Derby at Stamford Bridge on Sunday where a last-minute goal in stoppage time from Harry Kane took Tottenham from behind for a 2-2 draw.
Thomas Tuchel’s side dominated the first half and earned a 19th minute goal from their new summer signing Kalidou Kouliably after he powered home a volley from Marc Cucurella’s perfectly crossed corner.
Spurs were struggling to make an impression until the second half when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg managed to equalize.
Controversy sparked however when referee Anthony Taylor failed to penalise Rodrigo Bentancur for a challenge on Kai Havertz, which brought fury to the two managers, Tuchel and Conte, who both went face-to-face and ended up receiving yellow cards.
After the game restored, Chelsea regained the lead when a pass from Raheem Sterling found the feet of Reece James and celebrations at Stamford Bridge were soaring.
Chelsea couldn’t see the game out however and a header from Harry Kane in stoppage time took the game to a 2-2 draw.
Tempers continued to rise and at full time, Tuchel and Conte clashed once more, somewhat comically to earn red cards with a melee of players and staff arguably spoiling the fun. A great end to the weekend’s action.
Another win for Arsenal sees them second in the table
Man City signing Gabriel Jesus scored two goals for Arsenal in an entertaining encounter at the Emirates Stadium.
The Brazilian striker took his Premier League total from six goals to eight in his past nine appearances with two goals scored before half time.
Early into the second half came a glimmer of hope for Leicester when William Saliba scored an own goal. Shortly after, Granit Xhaka restored Arsenal’s two goal lead once again finding the back of Danny Ward’s net bringing the score to 3-1.
James Maddison found the bottom left hand corner with a right footed shot from a difficult angle to put Leicester back in it in the 74th minute, but it was Martinelli with a shot from outside the box assisted by Jesus to seal the deal for Arsenal 4-2.
The Premier League champions produced a blistering display the Etihad Stadium winning 4-0 against Bournemouth and putting them at the top of the table.
Dominating since kick-off, City took no time in putting the ball away in the first half with an opener from Gundogan setting the tone for the blues. An impressive strike from Kevin De Bruyne took the tally to 2-0 as he bent the ball into the bottom corner with the outside of his boot. Phil Foden made sure of the points before half time with a shot that Bournemouth keeper Mark Travers couldn’t keep out.
The cherries remained the weaker side into the second half, and although City couldn’t plot another goal themselves, an own goal from Jefferson Lerma took the score to a breezy 4-0 for Pep Guardiola’s side.
City top the Premier League table maintaining their 100 per cent start to the season, while Bournemouth take their first loss putting them in the tenth position.
Man United shocker puts them 4 goals behind and bottom of the table
Was it Brentford’s solid play or United’s shocking performance behind the humiliating 4-0 result against Man United at the Gtech Community Stadium?
Brentford scored four goals in the first 35 minutes of the game, leaving United supporters stunned as they continue their losing streak.
A strike from Josh Dasilva put the hosts ahead when his shot couldn’t be saved by David de Gea. Mathias Jenson doubled the lead shortly after when he dispossessed Christian Eriksen, following with goals from Ben Mee and Bryan Mbeumo to put them 4-0 up.
The defeat comes as United’s seventh in a row away from home in their worst run since 1936, and while Brentford will be celebrating their historic win, United boss Erik ten Hag faces the challenging task of picking up his players in time for the visit of Liverpool to Old Trafford next Monday.
Steven Gerrard gets one over on his old midfield rival Frank Lampard
Aston Villa and Everton managers came face to face for the first time since their old days playing against each other in Chelsea v Liverpool games.
Both sides had opened their season on a loss, but it was Gerrard’s team who got their first win of the campaign with a dominant display at Villa Park.
Aston Villa looked the more dominant side in the first half and got their breakthrough when Ollie Watkins, making his first start of the season, found Danny Ings inside the box and put them 1-0 up.
Everton, still lacking a recognised striker, did not manage a shot on target in the first half.
It wasn’t until the closing stages that the next goal came, when Buendia scored from another good play by Villa.
Lucas Digne turned a cross into his own net to give Everton hope and take away Villa’s clean sheet, but it was the Toffees who held on and gained the three points.
Dean Henderson saves a Declan Rice penalty to secure Forest their first Prem win since 1999
West Ham missed several chances in the first half when Pablo Fornals hit the crossbar, followed by a goal being disallowed and Kurt Zouma’s header being cleared off the line.
Benrahma managed to find the net for Nottingham Forest putting them in front and the home side’s celebrations went wild.
West Ham had an opportunity to pull it back when Scott McKenna took a handball inside the box. Declan Rice’s penalty was saved by Dean Henderson to deny West Ham an equaliser and it was Forest who walked away with the three points and a victory to remember.

Man City take the early title advantage on week one
The reigning champions Manchester City began the defence of their 2021/22 title and wasted no time in showing they will be the team to beat once again this season, beating the Hammers away 2-0.
Erling Haaland made his Manchester City Premier League debut, scoring two goals and winning man of the match, demonstrating the huge threat he will pose this season.
West Ham suffered an early blow as goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was substituted due to injury midway through the first half. New permanent signing Areola couldn’t react quick enough to Haaland’s dash, leading to a penalty for the blues. Haaland grabbed the ball, demanded he took it and slotted it home just nine minutes before half-time.
The second goal came in the 65th minute with a defence-splitting pass from Kevin De Bruyne into the feet of Haaland where he applied the finishing touch into the far corner. I’m sure we’ll be see that combination plenty of times this season and what looked like a difficult game on paper, was routine for City.
Liverpool drop points against newly promoted Fulham
A frustrating afternoon for Liverpool as they failed to take the three points away at Craven Cottage leaving them with a 2-2 draw.
Fulham played some splendid football, keeping the reds in their own half for the first 10 minutes of the game. Fulham opened the scoring as Aleksandar Mitrovic got the better of Trent Alexander-Arnold to head them ahead after meeting a superb cross by Kenny Tete.
In a thrilling match, Liverpool substitute Nunez marked his Premier League debut by equalising with a close-range flick before Fulham restored the lead from the penalty spot after Mitrovic was fouled by Virgil van Dijk.
This meant Liverpool had ended a run of 51 Premier League matches without conceding a penalty, the longest ongoing sequence in the competition.
A late leveller by Salah stopped Fulham from taking the win, but Klopp’s side will have plenty to work on if they want to get back to their top spot in the league table.
Arsenal began the season with a solid victory at Selhurst Park on the opening night of the Premier League, securing a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace. After losing their opening three games last season (well documented on a certain TV series just released), the early indication is that Arsenal may gain some early momentum into the season.
Mikel Arteta’s team were rewarded for an excellent start as Gabriel Martinelli scored the opener 20 minutes in to the first half from a perfect cross from new Man City recruit, Oleksandr Zinchenko.
Ramsdale had to be alert to divert Odsonne Edouard’s close-range header away from goal from what was Palace’s first attempt on goal just before half time. The home side put substantial palace on Arsenal’s defence, but Saliba and Gabriel in particular stood strong to keep them out.
Palace went on to concede an unfortunate own goal when Bukayo Saka’s cross was diverted past the keeper by Marc Guehi with a poor attempt at a clearance, giving Arsenal a 2-0 victory.
Tottenham won an impressive 4-1 to Southampton getting their Premier League off to a flying start.
Spurs fell behind in the 12th minute when Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse volleyed the ball into the ground and watched it bounce over Hugo Lloris. In previous seasons, Tottenham may have taken some time to bounce back from an early deficit, but from that moment it was all the North London side.
Ryan Sessegnon equalised from a header making his first Premier League goal for Spurs and then Eric Dier then went on to meet Son Heung-min’s cross with a low, flicked header into the far corner.
Tottenham were playing with confidence in the second half where a shocking Mohammed Salisu own goal and a calm Kulusevski finish secured an easy 4-1 victory.
Were Tottenham that good or is it Southampton’s lack of quality that determined the rest? It’s Chelsea v Tottenham next week, a real test for both sides.
Early signs of struggle for Everton
Chelsea opened the Premier League season with a 1-0 win at Goodison Park after a penalty from Jorginho sealed the deal in the first half.
Thomas Tuchel started both new summer signings Kalidou Koulibaly and Raheem Stirling, neither however could find the back of the net in their Chelsea debuts.
Everton posed little threat in their attack, with the sale of Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin absent with injury they lacked a recognised striker.
Ben Godfrey faced a serious early injury in the first half from a challenge by Kai Havertz leaving him with a fractured leg.
Chelsea did not seem to cause Everton too many serious problems, but Thomas Tuchel’s side will be delighted to start the season off with a win.
Change of management but no improvements from Man United
Manchester United have started the season off with a shocking 2-1 defeat at home to Brighton condemning Erik ten Hag to a losing start as manager.
It was Pascal Gross’s first-half double that stunned Old Trafford giving the Seaguls a 2-0 lead. Not even the second-half introduction of Cristiano Ronaldo could deny Brighton, although United did threaten a comeback when a scramble inside the box ended with Alexis Mac Allister putting the ball into his own net after an under pressure pass from the goalkeeper.
In nine previous league visits, Brighton had managed only one draw, so this victory was historic.
Bournemouth add further misery to Aston Villa’s poor form
Premier League newcomers Bournemouth got their season off to a dream start with a deserved 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at the Vitality Stadium.
The game’s opening goal came only two minutes in as Jefferson Lerma scored the quickest goal on matchday one by a promoted side in Premier League history. With Villa temporarily down to ten men due to left-back Lucas Digne coming off the pitch due to a nosebleed, the Cherries were able to convert a corner and put them 1-0 up.
After half time the second goal came in the 80th minute from Kieffer Moore scoring his first top-flight goal to give them a comfortable lead.
Leeds and Newcastle start with home wins, whilst Leicester draw against Brentford
After just surviving last season and losing Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha, Leeds were desperate to start off positively and they did just that, beating Wolves 2-1.
Newcastle saw off the long awaited Premier League return of Nottingham Forest 2-0 as Eddie Howe and the free-spending Georgie club look set to have a strong season.
Finally Leicester and Brentford shared the spoils with a 2-2 draw. Brentford made a terrific comeback from 2-0 down, whilst Leicester have clubs circling around their stars players as their financial struggles continue to be rumoured.
