F1® Paddock Club™ vs Other F1® Hospitality Options: What’s the Difference?

Attending a Formula 1® Grand Prix™ is unlike any other sporting experience. The speed, precision and theatre of race weekend create an atmosphere that is electric from the first practice session to the chequered flag on Sunday.

Yet not all tickets are created equal.

For guests seeking the highest level of access, comfort and prestige, F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality sits at the top of the hierarchy. It is widely regarded as the ultimate way to experience Formula 1®. However, there are several other F1® hospitality options available, each offering a different balance of access, luxury and price.

In this comprehensive guide, we explore what F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality includes, how it compares to other packages and how to decide which experience is right for you.

What Is F1® Paddock Club™ Hospitality?

F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality is the official premium hospitality programme of Formula 1®. It operates at every race on the calendar and is designed to provide guests with a fully immersive Grand Prix™ weekend.

Located directly above the team garages on the pit straight at most circuits, F1® Paddock Club™ places you at the centre of the action. From this vantage point, you overlook the starting grid, pit lane strategy calls and podium celebrations.

This is not simply a hospitality lounge with a good view. It is a curated experience that combines fine dining, insider access and exceptional service across the entire race weekend.

The Official Premium Hospitality of Formula 1®

F1® Paddock Club™ is owned and operated as an official product of Formula 1®. This is an important distinction.

Because it is integrated into the structure of the sport itself, F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality provides access opportunities that standard circuit hospitality cannot replicate. The experience is consistent across global venues, yet tailored to reflect the culture and character of each host city.

From Monaco to Abu Dhabi, Silverstone to Singapore, the framework remains premium and structured, ensuring that guests receive a world-class experience wherever they attend.

What’s Included in an F1® Paddock Club™ Package?

Although inclusions can vary slightly depending on the race, a typical three-day F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality package includes a range of premium features.

Trackside Suite Access Above the Pit Lane

This is the defining element of F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality.

Suites are positioned above the F1® team garages along the pit straight. Guests have access to a private, climate-controlled lounge with a dedicated balcony. From here, you can watch cars line up on the grid, witness pit stops from directly above and see post-race celebrations unfold below.

Large screens within the suite ensure that you do not miss any on-track battles unfolding elsewhere on the circuit.

This perspective offers a strategic understanding of the race that standard grandstand seating cannot match.

All-Day Gourmet Catering and Premium Open Bar

Dining within F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality reflects the global prestige of Formula 1®.

Menus are curated by professional chefs and often incorporate local flavours alongside international cuisine. Breakfast, lunch and afternoon service are provided, with live cooking stations common at many events.

The open bar includes Champagne, fine wines, premium spirits and soft drinks throughout the day. Service staff maintain high standards of attentiveness and discretion, ensuring a relaxed yet refined atmosphere.

For corporate hosts, this level of catering supports seamless client entertainment.

Pit Lane Walks

One of the most sought-after features of F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality is exclusive pit lane access at scheduled times.

During these sessions, guests can walk along the pit lane and observe teams preparing cars for practice, qualifying or the race itself. The proximity to the machinery and mechanics provides a powerful reminder of the technical precision that defines Formula 1®.

Photography opportunities are excellent, and the experience offers genuine insight into race weekend operations.

Guided Paddock Tours

F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality also includes a guided tour of the F1® paddock.

The paddock is the operational heart of Formula 1®, home to team motorhomes, hospitality units and technical staff. While access is controlled and does not allow free movement into garages, the tour provides a rare glimpse behind the scenes.

Guests may encounter drivers, team principals or media personnel during the tour, adding to the sense of exclusivity.

Access to Support Race Paddocks

At many Grands Prix™, guests can also explore support race paddocks such as F2™, F3™ or Porsche Supercup.

This broadens the experience beyond the main Formula 1® sessions and provides a fuller appreciation of the motorsport ladder.

Appearances from F1® Drivers and Team Personnel

Throughout the weekend, F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality guests often enjoy live interviews or Q&A sessions with current drivers, former world champions, team executives or broadcast personalities.

These appearances offer insights that go beyond televised coverage and enhance the overall sense of immersion.

The Atmosphere and Clientele

The atmosphere within F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality is professional, sociable and energetic.

Corporate groups use the setting to entertain key clients and reward top performers. Private guests attend to celebrate significant occasions or fulfil lifelong ambitions.

Dress code is typically smart casual, with many corporate guests opting for business attire. The environment balances exclusivity with comfort, ensuring guests feel both privileged and at ease.

What Are the Other F1® Hospitality Options?

While F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality represents the pinnacle, it is not the only premium offering available.

Understanding alternative options helps clarify the differences in access, comfort and value.

Team Hospitality Suites

Some Formula 1® teams operate dedicated hospitality suites within the broader F1® Paddock Club™ structure.

What Is a Team Suite?

A team suite is branded and managed by a specific constructor. Guests are immersed in that team’s environment, often surrounded by sponsors and senior personnel.

Inclusions may feature additional team-focused presentations or limited interaction opportunities with engineers or reserve drivers.

Key Differences from F1® Paddock Club™

While team suites sit within the same physical complex as F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality, availability is restricted and pricing can be significantly higher.

The experience is more brand-specific and less neutral than general F1® Paddock Club™ suites.

Who It’s Best Suited For

Team hospitality appeals to devoted fans of a specific constructor or corporate partners aligned with that brand.

The Champions Club

The Champions Club is another official Formula 1® hospitality product, positioned below F1® Paddock Club™ in terms of access and price.

What’s Included

Guests receive premium grandstand seating, access to a hospitality lounge and select insider appearances.

Catering is elevated compared to standard hospitality lounges but does not reach the scale of F1® Paddock Club™ dining.

Viewing Positions and Experience Level

Viewing is typically from a prime grandstand location rather than directly above the pit lane. This still offers excellent sightlines but lacks the strategic vantage point of F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality.

Price Point Comparison

Champions Club packages are more accessible, making them attractive to individuals seeking a premium experience without the highest investment tier.

Circuit Hospitality

Many circuits operate their own VIP hospitality areas separate from official Formula 1® programmes.

Hospitality Lounges and Private Boxes

These can include private suites, shared lounges and reserved viewing terraces. Standards vary depending on the venue and local operator.

Viewing Areas and Amenities

Some circuits offer excellent trackside perspectives, while others may be positioned further from the main action.

Catering quality can range from high-end to modest depending on the package.

Variations by Grand Prix™

Street circuits often provide creative hospitality spaces in hotels or rooftop venues. Permanent circuits usually offer more traditional suite layouts integrated into grandstand structures.

VIP Grandstand Packages

VIP grandstand options bridge the gap between standard tickets and full hospitality.

Reserved Seating

Guests benefit from allocated seats in prime areas such as the start/finish straight or key overtaking corners.

Limited Hospitality Inclusions

Packages may include light catering or access to a shared lounge, but they do not offer the immersive elements of F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality.

Who These Packages Appeal To

They are suited to fans prioritising strong views and comfort without requiring behind-the-scenes access.

General Admission and Standard Tickets

Standard tickets offer entry to the circuit and access to designated viewing areas.

While atmosphere can be vibrant and passionate, there are no premium inclusions, structured experiences or hospitality services.

The contrast with F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality is substantial in terms of comfort, access and exclusivity.

F1® Paddock Club™ vs Other F1® Hospitality: A Side-by-Side Comparison

  • Access and Exclusivity: F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality provides structured pit lane walks and guided paddock tours. Other packages may include guest speakers but rarely grant comparable operational access.
  • Viewing Position and Track Proximity: Positioned above the garages, F1® Paddock Club™ offers one of the most strategic viewpoints in Formula 1®. Other hospitality options often rely on grandstand-based viewing.
  • Food, Beverage and Service Standards: Catering within F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality is extensive and premium. Circuit hospitality can be excellent but is less consistent globally.
  • Behind-the-Scenes Access: The inclusion of paddock tours and pit lane walks sets F1® Paddock Club™ apart as a truly immersive experience.
  • Corporate Hosting Capabilities: Private suites, branding options and a professional environment make F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality particularly effective for corporate engagement.
  • Price Range and Value Considerations: Although it represents a higher financial commitment, the combination of location, access and service often justifies the investment for those seeking the best available experience.

Is F1® Paddock Club™ Worth It?

The value of F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality depends on your objectives.

For Corporate Clients

Formula 1® provides a dynamic setting for relationship building. F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality enhances this through comfort, exclusivity and shared high-impact moments.

Hosting within this environment positions your brand alongside one of the world’s most prestigious sporting properties.

For Private Individuals

For milestone celebrations, anniversaries or bucket-list ambitions, F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality delivers unforgettable memories and unparalleled access.

Return on Investment Considerations

For businesses, strengthened partnerships and enhanced brand perception can generate tangible long-term benefits.

How F1® Paddock Club™ Differs at Each Grand Prix™

While the core structure remains consistent, each event introduces its own character.

Permanent Circuits vs Street Circuits

At Silverstone or Monza, suites overlook expansive pit complexes steeped in motorsport history. In Monaco or Singapore, the urban backdrop and harbour settings add glamour and spectacle.

Iconic Race Highlights

Monaco offers proximity to the marina. Abu Dhabi combines twilight racing with architectural drama. Silverstone delivers heritage and passionate British crowds.

F1® Paddock Club™ hospitality adapts to each setting while maintaining its premium standards.

Nations Championship Explained: What’s New For 2026

From 2026, international rugby will enter one of the most significant new eras in its history. The launch of the Nations Championship will fundamentally reshape how the world’s best teams compete, how fans follow the sport, and how international fixtures are structured between World Cups.

For decades, rugby supporters have enjoyed iconic tournaments such as the Six Nations and The Rugby Championship. However, outside of the Rugby World Cup, elite teams from the northern and southern hemispheres have rarely faced each other in meaningful, competitive fixtures. The Nations Championship has been created to change that.

This article explains everything you need to know about the Nations Championship 2026. We explore why it has been introduced, how it will work, which teams are involved, the benefits and criticisms of the new format, and what supporters can expect when the inaugural tournament kicks off in 2026. We also look at how to experience the competition at its very best through official hospitality and premium packages with Engage.

What Is the Nations Championship 2026?

The Nations Championship is a planned biennial international men’s rugby union competition that will take place in even-numbered years, beginning in 2026. It has been designed by World Rugby to bring greater structure, meaning and consistency to the international calendar outside of Rugby World Cup years.

The competition will be played during the existing July and November international windows. Rather than a series of loosely connected test matches, these fixtures will now form part of a single global tournament with a defined format, standings and champion.

At its core, the Nations Championship aims to answer a long-standing problem in international rugby. While domestic leagues and regional competitions are well organised, international rugby has often lacked cohesion. The Nations’ Championship introduces a clear framework that benefits players, unions, broadcasters and fans alike.

Importantly, the competition does not replace existing tournaments. The Guinness Six Nations and The Rugby Championship remain central to the sport. Instead, the Nations Championship complements them, creating a global competition in years where there is no Rugby World Cup or British & Irish Lions tour.

Why Has the Nations Championship Been Introduced?

World Rugby has been open about the reasons behind the creation of the Nations Championship. One of the biggest challenges facing the international game has been the lack of meaningful fixtures outside major tournaments. Too many matches have felt like one-off events, with little long-term consequence.

By introducing a structured competition, World Rugby aims to ensure that every international match carries weight. Wins and losses will contribute to standings, prestige and progression, rather than being quickly forgotten after the final whistle.

Player welfare has also been a major driver. A clearer international calendar allows unions and clubs to better manage workloads, reduce unnecessary travel and provide players with more predictable rest periods. In a sport as physically demanding as rugby, this structure is crucial for long-term player health.

From a commercial perspective, the Nations’ Championship creates a more attractive product. Broadcasters and sponsors benefit from a consistent, global competition that is easy to follow and market. This, in turn, helps national unions generate sustainable revenue and reinvest in the grassroots game.

For fans, the appeal is simple. More high-quality matches. More regular clashes between the world’s best teams. And a competition that provides context and narrative throughout the international season.

Why 2026 Is a Landmark Year for International Rugby

The decision to launch the Nations Championship in 2026 is deliberate. Even-numbered years traditionally sit outside the sport’s biggest events, with Rugby World Cups and Lions tours taking place in odd-numbered years.

This gap has often left the international calendar feeling disjointed. By positioning the Nations Championship in even-numbered years, World Rugby has created a clear rhythm to the global game. Fans can look forward to a major international competition every year, without overlap or dilution.

The timing also allows the Nations Championship to become a central pillar of the sport rather than a secondary addition. With no competing global events, the tournament can command full attention from players, media and supporters.

In many ways, 2026 represents a reset for international rugby. It marks the start of a more structured, sustainable and globally connected era for the sport.

The Nations Championship Format Explained

The inaugural Nations Championship will feature twelve teams, bringing together the strongest rugby nations from both hemispheres along with two invited sides.

The competition includes all six Six Nations teams: England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. These are joined by the four SANZAAR nations: Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Completing the line-up are Japan and Fiji, two nations whose growth and competitiveness have made them increasingly important to the global game.

Rather than a single league table, the tournament is split into two conferences. One conference consists of the Six Nations teams, while the other includes the SANZAAR nations alongside Japan and Fiji.

Each team plays all six teams from the opposing conference across the July and November international windows. This means every nation faces a full set of cross-hemisphere opponents, delivering the global match-ups fans have long wanted to see.

At the conclusion of the November window, the team that finishes top of each conference will contest a grand final to decide the Nations Championship winner. This showpiece match adds a clear climax to the tournament and gives the competition a defining moment.

For the first two editions, in 2026 and 2028, there will be no promotion or relegation. From 2030 onwards, movement between the Nations Championship and the second-tier World Rugby Nations Cup will be introduced, opening the door for emerging nations to rise through the ranks.

How the Nations Championship Will Be Played

One of the strengths of the Nations Championship is that it fits neatly into the existing international calendar. Matches will be played during the traditional July and November test windows, ensuring minimal disruption to domestic competitions and club rugby.

This approach allows teams to prepare properly, maintain continuity and avoid excessive travel. Fixtures will be shared between home and away venues, giving supporters around the world the chance to see Nations’ Championship matches live.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect for fans is the regularity of northern versus southern hemisphere fixtures. Matches such as England vs New Zealand, France vs South Africa or Ireland vs Australia will no longer be rare events. Instead, they will become a core part of the international calendar.

The format ensures competitive balance while maintaining the prestige of hosting matches at iconic rugby stadiums. From Twickenham and the Principality Stadium to Eden Park and Ellis Park, the Nations’ Championship will showcase rugby at its most atmospheric.

How the Nations Championship Compares to Existing Competitions

A common question surrounding the Nations Championship is how it affects existing tournaments. The answer is reassuring for traditionalists.

The Six Nations remains unchanged. It continues to be played annually and retains its unique identity and rivalries. Similarly, The Rugby Championship remains a cornerstone of the southern hemisphere game in alternate years.

Rather than replacing these competitions, the Nations Championship adds a new global layer. It connects regional tournaments, provides context to international windows and creates a clearer pathway from one season to the next.

In many ways, the Nations Championship does what international rugby has long needed. It ties everything together.

Benefits of the Nations Championship for the Sport

The benefits of the Nations Championship extend across the entire sport.

For players, a structured calendar reduces uncertainty and supports better welfare. Knowing when high-intensity matches will occur allows for smarter conditioning and recovery.

For unions, guaranteed elite fixtures provide financial stability. Predictable revenue streams help fund development programmes, women’s rugby and grassroots initiatives.

For fans, the competition delivers more drama, more rivalries and more meaningful matches. Every fixture has context. Every result matters.

For rugby as a global product, the Nations Championship enhances visibility and relevance. It strengthens the sport’s position in an increasingly competitive entertainment landscape.

What Fans Can Expect From the Nations Championship

For supporters, the Nations Championship promises a step-change in the international rugby experience.

Fans can expect full-strength teams, competitive intensity and a clear narrative that runs across the season. The grand final provides a focal point that international rugby has often lacked outside World Cups.

Matchdays will feel bigger. Stadiums will be fuller. And rivalries will deepen as teams face each other more regularly.

Whether watching at home or attending in person, the Nations’ Championship is designed to be rugby at its best.

Nations Championship Venues: Home Nations Matches and Iconic Stadiums

One of the most exciting elements of the Nations Championship is the opportunity to watch elite international rugby at some of the most famous stadiums in the sport. For supporters in the UK and Ireland, home fixtures will be staged at historic venues that are synonymous with international rugby and renowned for their atmosphere on big matchdays.

With every Nations Championship match carrying tournament significance, home games for the Home Nations promise to be among the most sought-after fixtures on the calendar.

Allianz Stadium – England

As the largest dedicated rugby stadium in the world, Allianz Stadium provides a fitting stage for England’s Nations Championship home matches. Formerly known as Twickenham, the stadium remains the spiritual home of English rugby and one of the most recognisable venues in global sport.

Nations’ Championship fixtures at Allianz Stadium are expected to attract capacity crowds, particularly when England host southern hemisphere powerhouses such as New Zealand, South Africa or Australia. With over 80,000 seats and a long history of hosting rugby’s biggest occasions, the stadium delivers an atmosphere that matches the scale and significance of the competition.

In addition to its on-field heritage, Allianz Stadium is renowned for its extensive hospitality offerings. A wide range of official lounges, premium suites and dining experiences make it one of the best venues in world rugby for enjoying international matches in comfort and style. For supporters looking to elevate their Nations’ Championship experience, England home fixtures at Allianz Stadium will be among the most sought-after dates on the calendar.

Book ICON for the 2026 Nations Championship now and experience England taking on rugby’s biggest nations in style. From gourmet dining and complimentary bars to unrivalled views of the action, Engage guarantees an unforgettable day of sport and sophistication.

Principality Stadium – Wales

Few venues in world sport can match the atmosphere of a sold-out Principality Stadium. Located in the heart of Cardiff, the stadium’s retractable roof creates an intense, enclosed environment that amplifies crowd noise and emotion.

Wales’ Nations Championship home matches will benefit from this unique setting, especially when hosting touring giants from the southern hemisphere. The city-centre location also makes the Principality Stadium one of the most accessible and popular venues for travelling supporters, with pre- and post-match atmosphere extending well beyond the stadium itself.

Scottish Gas Murrayfield – Scotland

Murrayfield remains the spiritual home of Scottish rugby and offers one of the most impressive stadium backdrops in international rugby. With views across Edinburgh and a passionate supporter base, Scotland’s home Nations Championship fixtures are set to deliver memorable occasions.

Matches against top-tier opposition will give Scottish supporters the chance to see regular elite competition on home soil, something the Nations Championship has been designed to provide. Murrayfield’s modern facilities also make it well suited to premium matchday experiences.

Aviva Stadium – Ireland

The Aviva Stadium in Dublin has established itself as one of the premier rugby venues in Europe. Its modern design, excellent sightlines and central location make it a standout setting for Ireland’s Nations Championship home matches.

Ireland’s recent success on the international stage means demand for tickets is expected to be extremely high, particularly for fixtures against southern hemisphere opposition. The Aviva’s hospitality offerings and proximity to the city centre create an outstanding overall matchday experience for both domestic and travelling fans.

Hospitality and Premium Experiences at the Nations Championship

With elite teams, iconic venues and global attention, the Nations Championship is perfectly suited to hospitality and premium experiences.

International rugby already carries a sense of occasion. The Nations’ Championship elevates that further by ensuring every match has significance within a global competition. This makes it ideal for corporate hosting, client entertainment and unforgettable sporting weekends.

Official hospitality packages typically include premium seating, access to exclusive lounges, high-quality dining and inclusive drinks. Many experiences also offer pre-match and post-match entertainment, expert analysis and behind-the-scenes insight that standard tickets cannot provide.

For those looking to combine world-class rugby with comfort, service and exclusivity, Nations’ Championship hospitality delivers an exceptional matchday experience.

The Cheltenham Festival: A World-Class Sporting Event

The Cheltenham Festival is widely regarded as the pinnacle of the National Hunt season. It brings together the best horses, jockeys and trainers from Britain, Ireland and beyond, all competing on one of the most demanding tracks in the sport.

Cheltenham’s undulating course, combined with the famous uphill finish, creates a true test of stamina and skill. Many races are decided in the final strides, adding to the tension and excitement that define the Festival.

What truly sets Cheltenham apart, however, is its atmosphere. The crowd’s passion is unmatched, and the collective roar as the first race begins is one of the most iconic sounds in sport. It is this blend of elite competition and emotional intensity that makes the Festival so special.

Four Days of Drama, Tradition and Atmosphere

Each day of the Cheltenham Festival has its own character, racing highlights and social feel.

Champion Day, Tuesday

Champion Day marks the opening of the Festival and sets the tone for the week. Excitement builds throughout the morning before reaching a peak as the runners line up for the Champion Hurdle.

It is a day filled with anticipation. The crowds are fresh, the atmosphere is electric, and every race feels important. For many, Champion Day captures the purest sense of what Cheltenham is all about.

Style Wednesday

Style Wednesday combines top-class racing with a strong social scene. While the racing remains the focus, fashion and flair are very much part of the day.

The Queen Mother Champion Chase headlines the card and regularly produces thrilling finishes. It is a popular choice for hospitality guests who want a lively atmosphere alongside elite sport.

St Patrick’s Thursday

St Patrick’s Thursday is known for its vibrant celebrations and passionate crowds, particularly among Irish racegoers. The atmosphere across the racecourse is loud, energetic and full of colour.

Gold Cup Day, Friday

The Emirates Old Trafford will now join the ICON portfolio, our collection of world class official hospitality that includes Lord’s and The Kia Oval, as well as at the best venues in the UK and around the world.

Cricket

Alongside the Manchester Originals in the Hundred, Emirates Old Trafford will host three crucial England matches, which will showcase some of the best England and international players around. Historically the wicket is the quickest in Britain, conjuring up plenty of action and drama in all formats of the game. England legend James Anderson, who has a stadium end named after him, has been playing for Lancashire for over 20 years and is hero in the area.

Firstly, there will be two England international ODIs in close proximity, smack bang in the heart of the British summer. On Sunday 17 July, India will be the visitors to Old Trafford, with the Bharat Army hoping to continue their good form against England in this format, having won a three match series 2-1 in India. Expect huge crowds and support for both nations in this final match of three, which could will be a crucial decider on the day.

England, the current ODI World Champions will then play South Africa on Friday 22 July, as the Emirates Old Trafford hosts two matches in quick succession. South Africa are 5th in the current world standings, just a place behind India in 4th so expect fireworks in this ODI match as well. With another World Cup in 2023, these ODI matches are extremely important for selectors and all eyes will be on the performances of England and captain Eoin Morgan.

South Africa will be in England most of the summer playing cricket, none bigger than an August bank holiday test match at Emirates Old Trafford, the second of a three match series. England are desperately trying to recapture some form in the purest form of the game and Joe Root and his team are under serious pressure to deliver. Expect a England line-up determined to put in a strong performance against South Africa and their new test captain Dean Elgar.

What do you get at ICON Emirates Old Trafford?

We have a fantastic hospitality package lined up for the cricket this summer and you can expect an incredible day out for clients, friends and families. England v New Zealand Series Review

England v New Zealand Series Review

When play was about to begin at 10:59am on June 2nd, few would have predicted what came to pass at Lord’s, Trent Bridge, and Headingley over the following month. Although there was a keen sense of anticipation around The Home of Cricket, with Ben Stokes and Brendan McCullum still fresh in their new roles as captain and head coach, the past year or so hasn’t exactly suggested that this test team was capable of mixing it with the best in the world. How wrong we all were. Three wins from three matches, all achieved from positions that England of old would have capitulated and collapsed were to follow, and that’s not the least of it.

The beginning of a new era

England began their so-called test reset with a taste of things to come at Lord’s. Joe Root notched up his 10,000-test run as part of a spellbinding 115 not out 4th innings century to secure the win – honourable mention to Ben Foakes who provided the perfect foil for the ex-captain as he steered England to only their second win in their last eleven test matches. Despite Root’s heroics however, this was really a match and wicket for the bowlers to excel, and England’s attack didn’t disappoint with Jimmy Anderson returning to the line-up to take six wickets and Matthew Potts on debut taking a superb seven across both innings as he introduced himself to the England faithful for the first time.

Engage Guests at Lord's Sidebottom, Prior, Small
Engage Guests at Lord’s Sidebottom, Prior, Small

Whilst Lord’s was a brilliant win for an England team starved of both confidence and results of late, and meant England chasing down a total that they had previously baulked at exactly a year earlier against the same opponents, it was about to be topped. Twice. After high first innings totals by both sides, which for England included Ollie Pope hitting a brilliant 145 and yet more runs for Root (176), England were set 299 to win the match. Everything seemed all too familiar when Alex Lees edged one to Blundell off the bowling of Southee to put England at 93-4, and we all thought we knew what was coming. With Jonny Bairstow at the crease though, it’s never that simple. Still needing over 200 runs to win the match, aided by Captain Ben Stokes (75*), Bairstow produced an innings full of shots you’d expect to see in The Hundred or Vitality Blast as he hit 136 off only 92 deliveries, including bringing up his century in only 77 balls to fall agonisingly short of an English record set in 1902. This test match encapsulated the change in mindset that both Stokes and McCullum have looked to instil in this England side, and they weren’t done yet…

To Headingley, the scene of one of England’s greatest days in recent years. Ben Stokes and Jack Leach’s remarkable run chase in the 2019 Ashes series will live long in the memory, and the latter was at it again, but this time with the ball, taking five-for in both innings, and in the process becoming only the third spinner to do so in a test match in England. The other two? Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan. However, much like at Trent Bridge, few could keep pace with Jonny Bairstow who stole the show once again, this time on his home ground. At 55-6 in the first innings, England again turned to the in-form Yorkshireman, who, aided by debutant Jamie Overton (97), hit another remarkable century, perhaps even more impressive than his match winning one at Trent Bridge, given the dire situation England found themselves in, with the Kiwis setting a solid 329 all out in their first innings. For the third time in three matches, England would need to produce a 4th innings run chase that would be amongst their ten biggest of all time; and for the third time in three matches, they did so in style. Root and Pope would hit centuries and Bairstow a casual, unbeaten 71 off 44 deliveries to win the match and whitewash the series at a canter.

What’s to come?

With a one-off test against India at Edgbaston, and a three-match series against South Africa at Lord’s, Old Trafford and The Oval to come, there should be plenty more box office action to get stuck into this summer. A new era has dawned on English test cricket, and by all accounts, it looks like it is going to be an exciting one.
