A phenomenal tournament of tennis came to the end on Sunday as Carlos Alcaraz claimed his 6th grand slam title, whilst Aryna Sabalenka took the honours in the women’s singles at the US Open. After a thrilling two weeks of action, here at Engage, we take a look back at the final Grand Slam of 2025, and what it could mean for tennis going into the rest of the year and 2026.
It was the fifth time Alcaraz and Sinner have met each other in finals in 2025, and the third Grand Slam Final meeting between the pair this year. The pair have won two Grand Slams each in 2025 and worryingly for the rest of the tour candidates, they don’t look like letting up.
With victory in New York, Alcaraz regained World Number One spot, leapfrogging Sinner in the process. The Spanish joked after the match on Sunday that he sees the Italian more than his family, which may ring true if the duo continue to dominate in the years to come.
Comfortable victories are becoming a hallmark of one another’s game as they continue to go from strength-to-strength. In a less close-knit battle than Wimbledon and the French Open, Alcaraz won by three sets to one as the Spaniard showed off his impressive form. This was form that he had been working on with coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, in order to avenge his defeat from Wimbledon two months ago, and it certainly seemed to pay off.
So can anyone stop Alcaraz and Sinner? Alcaraz leads the world rankings by less than 800 points from Sinner, however, it is very much a 2-horse race for the number one spot. Third in the world is Alexander Zverev, a mammoth 4850 points behind the Italian. It is most definitely Alcaraz and Sinner’s world at the moment, and we’re just living in it.
Meanwhile in the women’s singles, Aryna Sabalenka retained her title from 2024 and added her first Grand Slam victory of 2025. An emotional victory saw Sabalenka fall to her knees at the conclusion of the match, defeating Amanda Anisimova 2-0 in New York on Saturday. The World Number One has been defeated in two Grand Slam Finals in 2025, making victory on Saturday all the more satisfying.
It was Sabalenka’s third consecutive US Open Final, having taken victory against Jessica Pegula in 2024. Sabalenka faced Pegula in this year’s semi-final, winning after three sets before advancing to the final. With the Belarusian back in Grand Slam winning form, can she be stopped in 2026?
Although the US Open sees the conclusion of the 2025 Grand Slams, there is still plenty of tennis to come before the turn of the year. The China Open, the Rolex Paris Masters and the ATP and WTA Tour Finals are all on the calendar in the next few months, with tennis fans eagerly awaiting the action.
It will be interesting to see how the rest of the tennis world responds to Alcaraz and Sinner’s dominance, while eyes will be on Sabalenka to see if she can repeat her magnificent feat from New York last weekend.
Preparations will also be underway for the 2026 Grand Slams with the Australian Open on the horizon in January. As far as the British contingent go, a fantastic season for Jack Draper saw him take the Indian Wells title and climb as high as World Number 4, whilst Emma Raducanu is moving back up the World Rankings again, after a few years plagued by injury. Can we see any of the Brits challenge for the Grand Slams next year?
