The Title Race: Arsenal vs Manchester City

The Premier League title race has been defined by one rivalry all season: Arsenal vs Manchester City. As it stands, Arsenal sit top with 70 points from 33 games, while City trail by three points having played a game fewer meaning Pep Guardiola’s side could yet draw level before the Gunners even kick a ball this weekend.

Arsenal’s season has been nothing short of remarkable under Mikel Arteta. The Gunners accumulated an eye-catching 21 wins from 33 league games, and boast a goal difference of +37 narrowly ahead of City’s +36. The north London outfit have already reached the Champions League semi-finals against Atlético Madrid, meaning their remaining weeks are packed with high-stakes football on two fronts.

City’s run-in, however, is arguably more daunting. Guardiola’s side still face Brighton, Everton, Brentford and Aston Villa on the final day all teams with something significant to play for. City have shown they are far from done, thumping Chelsea 4-0 in April to signal their resurgence, while Erling Haaland continues to lead the Golden Boot race with 22 goals to his name.

The critical detail: if the title comes down to goal difference, Arsenal currently hold the edge (+37 to +36). But City have scored more goals overall (65 to Arsenal’s 63), and would win any head-to-head tiebreaker having accumulated more points across their two meetings this season.

The Fight for European Football

Below the top two, the race for European football is fiercely competitive. England’s strong UEFA coefficient performance means the Premier League earns five Champions League spots this season making fifth place an even more coveted position than in previous years.

Champions League Places (Top 5)

Arsenal and City are already guaranteed their spots. The remaining three Champions League positions are being fought over by Manchester United (58 pts), Aston Villa (58 pts) and Liverpool (55 pts) with United and Villa level on points but separated by goal difference.

Liverpool, the defending champions, have endured a difficult title defence after a remarkable 2024/25 season. Arne Slot’s side find themselves in fifth, three points behind United and Villa, with games against Brighton (won 3-0) suggesting their form is returning at the right time. Key upcoming fixtures against Manchester United in May will be pivotal.

Aston Villa have been one of the stories of the campaign under Unai Emery, boasting the joint-longest winning run in the division at 8 consecutive victories during the season. They face a potentially congested final run-in if their Europa League run continues, with a final day trip to Manchester City a potential classic.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have been transformed under Michael Carrick, who was appointed in January following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils have gone on an 11-game unbeaten run the joint-longest in the league to propel themselves into genuine Champions League contention.

Europa League & Conference League Spots (6th-7th)

Chelsea (6th, 48 pts) lead the pack for the final European spots, but have been overtaken by Brighton following a 3-0 defeat at the Amex. Everton (10th, 47 pts) and Fulham (12th, 45 pts) remain in contention with just 10 points separating 5th and 12th place.

Everton under David Moyes have shown impressive home form of late beating Chelsea 3-0 and securing a crucial draw at Brentford keeping their European dream very much alive heading into the run-in. The Toffees face Manchester City away and have the visit of Wolves and Burnley still to come.

Fulham sit three points off the European places but have played entertaining football all season none more so than their extraordinary 4-5 defeat to Manchester City in December. With Arsenal visiting Craven Cottage on 2 May, Marco Silva’s side have a huge chance to make a statement in a match with title ramifications.

The Relegation Battle: Drama at the Bottom

Wolverhampton Wanderers have already been confirmed as relegated the first team to drop to the Championship after an eight-year stint in the top flight. Their 19-game winless run and 22 defeats tell the story of a catastrophically difficult season.

But the real drama centres on the battle for the other two relegation spots, with Tottenham Hotspur (18th, 31 pts), Burnley (19th, 20 pts), West Ham (17th, 32 pts) and Nottingham Forest (16th, 36 pts) all still in various degrees of danger.

Tottenham Hotspur The Club in Crisis

Tottenham have had a season to forget. They are on their third manager of the campaign Roberto De Zerbi was appointed in late March following the departures of Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor. Spurs sit 18th with 31 points, one above the drop zone. De Zerbi’s attacking philosophy is taking shape but time is running out. A crunch game against already-relegated Wolves on 25 April could be a vital three points.

West Ham Fighting for Survival

West Ham have shown character under Nuno Espírito Santo, who himself replaced Graham Potter in September. The Hammers climbed out of the relegation zone following a crucial draw with Crystal Palace, but remain only a point above Spurs with games still to play. Their match against Arsenal in May takes on enormous significance a must-not-lose encounter for the London club.

Burnley Heading Back Down?

Burnley’s return to the top flight looks to be ending after just one season. With only 20 points from 33 games and the worst defensive record in the league (67 goals conceded), the Clarets face a near-impossible task to survive. Their remaining run-in includes away trips to Manchester City a fixture they lost 5-1 in the reverse earlier this season.
