Race Round-Up: Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix 2026

Max Verstappen led every lap at Marina Bay to take his second win in eight days, adding the Singapore Grand Prix to his victory at Sepang and completing a weekend sweep of Sprint, pole and race. Kimi Antonelli finished third and can now mathematically win the championship at the next round in Austin. George Russell, meanwhile, endured the weekend of his season.

Sprint Saturday and Qualifying

The final Sprint of the season delivered, largely at Mercedes’ expense. Russell took the lead from Verstappen at the start, then lost the car at the final corner in damp conditions and crashed out of the lead. Verstappen inherited the win and never looked back.

Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc took second and third for Ferrari, with Antonelli fourth after the McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris made contact on the final lap. Liam Lawson was fifth, Ollie Bearman sixth, and Isack Hadjar’s weekend began badly with a retirement after two laps.

A few hours later Verstappen took pole position, his first at Marina Bay, to complete a near-perfect Saturday. Hamilton lined up third, Antonelli fourth.

Russell’s day then got worse. An engine penalty dropped him to nineteenth on the grid for Sunday, turning a weekend that began with Sprint pole into a recovery drive. Hadjar started from the pit lane after taking additional power unit elements, joining both Aston Martins there.

Race Day at Marina Bay

Verstappen Controls It From Lights Out

Leclerc got the better launch, but Verstappen covered the inside line and held the lead into Turn 1. That was effectively the race. The Ferrari hung within a second for the opening laps, close enough to use Overtake Mode, before Verstappen began easing away.

Gabriel Bortoleto’s Audi stopped near the pit lane exit with a suspected gearbox problem, bringing out a Virtual Safety Car. The car then caught fire in the pit lane, which marshals dealt with quickly.

By lap 28 Verstappen led by almost eighteen seconds. A clean stop for mediums on lap 33 changed nothing. He spent the closing stint managing a radio problem that left his team communicating by pit board, and still took the flag seven seconds clear.

Ferrari Split Their Strategies, and It Cost Hamilton

Ferrari ran their drivers on different plans. Hamilton pitted first, on lap 19, and emerged on fresh softs behind Lawson. Leclerc stayed out longer and came back in front of his teammate, which left Hamilton stuck behind the sister car reporting that he was losing two seconds a lap.

When the Virtual Safety Car came out for Lance Stroll’s stricken Aston Martin, Leclerc and Antonelli both took a second stop. Hamilton did not. On lap 46 Leclerc went past him on fresher rubber, and in the closing laps Hamilton’s tyres gave up entirely. Antonelli took third into Turn 16, Norris followed through, and Piastri picked him off as well.

Hamilton apologised to his team over the radio afterwards, indicating that the call to stay out had been his.

How They Finished

Verstappen won from Leclerc and Antonelli, with Norris fourth and Piastri fifth despite a slow puncture that forced a second stop. Hamilton took sixth.

Lawson claimed seventh for Racing Bulls and Nico Hulkenberg eighth for Audi. Russell recovered from nineteenth to ninth, and Hadjar completed the top ten from the pit lane.

Pierre Gasly just missed out in eleventh, ahead of the Haas pair of Bearman and Esteban Ocon, Carlos Sainz and Arvid Lindblad. Stroll, Franco Colapinto and Bortoleto were the retirements, with Alex Albon classified eighteenth despite stopping late on.

Paddock Gossip

Antonelli Can Win the Title in Austin

Third place took Antonelli to 340 points and put the championship within reach at the very next round. The arithmetic is not simple, though. By one widely circulated calculation he would need to win in Austin, with Russell finishing ninth or lower and Hamilton fifth or lower, and all three conditions must hold. Winning on its own would not do it.

Put more simply, he needs to outscore Russell by twenty-four points across the weekend. If it does not happen in Texas, Mexico City a week later is the next opportunity. Either way, a twenty-year-old in his second season is about to become world champion.

Hamilton’s “Painful Lesson”

Hamilton’s apology over team radio was unusual for its directness. He took responsibility for the decision not to make a second stop, having spent the middle of the race frustrated at being held up behind Leclerc on an alternative strategy.

It caps a difficult run. He now sits third in the standings, eleven points ahead of a Verstappen who has won the last two races, and the rules-of-engagement conversation he started at Monza clearly has not been resolved.

Verstappen’s Late-Season Run

Two wins in eight days, after going fourteen rounds without one. The Singapore victory was his 73rd career win and came on his 250th Grand Prix start, and it was his first win and first pole at Marina Bay, one of the few venues that had eluded him.

It also moves him to fourth in the standings, seventeen points behind Russell and six behind Hamilton. The title is gone, but second place is suddenly live.

Russell’s Weekend to Forget

Sprint pole, then a crash out of the Sprint lead at the final corner, then an engine penalty dropping him to nineteenth for the race. Ninth place and two points was a decent salvage job from a weekend that could hardly have gone worse, but his cushion over Hamilton in the fight for second is now only nine points.

Racing Bulls Still Deciding

Team Principal Alan Permane confirmed that Racing Bulls will settle their 2027 driver line-up in the coming weeks. With Lawson scoring regularly, Lindblad in his rookie season and Yuki Tsunoda having stood in earlier in the year, that is a decision worth watching.

United States Grand Prix Preview

Formula 1 takes a weekend off before heading to Austin, where the championship could be decided.

The Layout

The Circuit of the Americas runs anticlockwise over 5.513 kilometres and 20 corners, with the race scheduled for 56 laps on Sunday 25 October at 3pm local time, which is 8pm in the UK. This is a standard weekend with three practice sessions, not a Sprint, which is a change from recent years at the venue.

The lap opens with one of the most distinctive corners in the sport: a steep uphill run to the blind left-hander at Turn 1, climbing roughly forty metres from the grid. The Esses that follow were modelled on Silverstone’s Maggotts and Becketts sequence and reward commitment above all. The long right-hander through Turns 16 to 18 takes its inspiration from Istanbul Park’s Turn 8, and the surface has historically been bumpy enough to influence setup.

Where the Overtaking Should Happen

Austin has earned a reputation as a circuit that produces racing, and the reasons are structural rather than accidental.

Turn 1 is the headline: a long run from the grid to a tight, blind, uphill apex that regularly produces first-lap chaos and genuine passes throughout. The other prime zone is the hairpin at Turn 11, which feeds the long back straight into the heavy braking area at Turn 12. Get a good exit at 11 and the move at 12 is on. Turn 15 offers a third, less reliable option for anyone who has lost out earlier in the sector.

The complication is the setup compromise. Teams need straight-line efficiency for the back straight and enough load for the Esses and the Turn 16 to 18 sweep, and getting that balance wrong tends to show up badly in race trim.

How It Compares to Marina Bay

Singapore and Austin sit at opposite ends of the spectrum, which makes the back-to-back interesting.

Marina Bay is tight, walled, run at night and relentlessly physical, with passing so difficult that strategy and track position usually decide the result. Austin is wide and flowing, run in daylight, with generous run-off and two proper overtaking zones. Mistakes at Marina Bay end your race, as Russell discovered in the Sprint. Mistakes at Austin cost you a few tenths.

Marina Bay is also flat. Austin has significant elevation change, and that gradient at Turn 1 combined with the bumps is part of why the circuit tends to scramble the order more readily than a street track does.

What a Title Decider Means for Hospitality Demand

Austin is already the largest Grand Prix in the United States and treats the weekend as a festival as much as a race, with a headline concert programme running at the trackside amphitheatre alongside the on-track action. The 2026 edition has expanded to a four-day format, the first time the event has done that since joining the calendar in 2012.

Add the possibility of a championship being settled on Sunday and the proposition changes. A title decider is the rarest thing on the calendar, and it cannot be booked in advance because nobody knows which race it will be until a week or two out. That tends to compress demand into exactly the window we are now in.

For corporate hosts, Austin has practical advantages over the long-haul Asian rounds that just finished. The circuit sits around twenty minutes from downtown Austin, the city has genuine hotel capacity, and the four-day format gives more scope to build a client programme around the racing rather than squeezing it into a single day.
