Aston Villa continued their upward trajectory under Unai Emery, securing European qualification with consistent performances throughout the season, narrowly missing out on Champions League football.

Wolves bounced back after a tough start by appointing Vítor Pereira in December, steering them clear of relegation and ultimately to a respectable 16th-place finish in the Premier League. In their previous encounters last season, Villa and Wolves shared the points with their opponents. In September, Villa came out on top at Villa Park, winning 3-1. Later in February, Villa lost 2-0 away from home at the Molineux.
