2023/24 Chelsea v Newcastle United - Carabao Cup
Chelsea face Newcastle in the quarter final of the Carabao Cup, as both teams look to secure their semi final place in the 2023/24 edition of the competition.
The Carabao Cup is a yearly elimination tournament in men’s domestic soccer in England. Managed by the English Football League (EFL), it is accessible to all teams in the highest four tiers of the English football league structure, totalling 92 teams. These tiers encompass the top-tiered Premier League and the three divisions of the English Football League, which are the Championship, League One, and League Two.
Chelsea find themselves in the latter stages of the competition after 3 home victories so far this season, against AFC Wimbledon, Brighton and Blackburn Rovers. It has proved a great opportunity for players to impress so far, but much stronger starting 11’s can be expected now as the stakes become higher.
Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping for a first trophy as Chelsea manager and with the league title already unlikely, this becomes one of only two chances he has to win a cup.
Newcastle have had a competition to remember so far, with a hard-fought victory over Manchester City in round three, followed by a 3-0 smashing of Manchester United at Old Trafford. Two famous victories for the Geordies and they will be hoping to carry it on with a victory at Stamford Bridge on their way to the semi finals.
